The successful applicant will join a dynamic Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service comprised of three clinicians (two ACVIM-LAIM and one ACVS-LA board certified), four residents (two ACVIM-LAIM and two ACVS-LA), and two service Veterinary technicians. The Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery group is part of the larger Farm Animal Alliance group of 12 faculty members (4 ACVIM-LAIM, 3 ACT, 1 ACVS-LA, 1 ACVCP, and 4 general practitioners) offering ambulatory services and hospital care to livestock and companion farm animals in the Knoxville area. While the successful applicant will share some clinical emergency responsibilities with other members of the Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service to provide support after hours, they will have the benefit of the three faculty on the Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service (1 ACVS and 1 ACVECC board certified) providing the majority of emergency coverage.
The Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service sees a diverse caseload of production and companion farm animal species. Beef cattle, small ruminants, pigs, camelids compose the majority of cases along with dairy cattle and limited exotic hoofstock.
Expectations include primarily clinical service and clinical teaching for a minimum of 24 weeks a year, with negotiable amounts of preclinical teaching and research depending on the applicant’s interests and choice of clinical track or tenure track. The faculty member will share in the clinical and didactic teaching of students in the veterinary curriculum and the training of interns and residents in specialty emphasis areas.
Responsibilities include individual animal care for food and fiber animal species (beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goats, camelids, and swine). The faculty member will participate in clinical emergency duty with other faculty. Depending on negotiated effort allocations, the successful candidate may be expected to develop new teaching and education courses and tools, contribute to the discovery of new knowledge, and participate in outreach to veterinarians, producers, and other stakeholders.
QualificationsCandidates must have a DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree and have completed a clinical residency program recognized by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS-LA) or the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM-LAIM). Consideration will be given both to board-certified and board-eligible candidates. Preference will be given to applicants with experience with livestock species as well as those having interest in companion farm animals (pet pigs, small ruminants, and camelids). Candidates should be able to demonstrate surgical proficiency for routine and emergency procedures in farm animals.
