Internship Autonomous Systems Engineer information

What is an internship autonomous systems engineer?

Internship Autonomous Systems Engineers are students or recent graduates who work temporarily with a company to gain hands-on experience in designing, developing, and testing autonomous systems, such as self-driving vehicles or robotics. Their responsibilities typically include assisting with software development, data analysis, simulation, and integration of sensors and control systems. This internship provides practical exposure to cutting-edge technologies and helps interns develop technical and problem-solving skills relevant to autonomous systems engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship autonomous systems engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a solid foundation in robotics, control systems, programming (often Python/C++), and a relevant engineering or computer science background. Familiarity with tools such as ROS (Robot Operating System), simulation platforms (like Gazebo), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication help interns excel in collaborative, fast-paced engineering environments. These competencies are crucial for effectively contributing to the development and testing of autonomous technologies while learning from experienced professionals.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as an internship autonomous systems engineer?

As an Autonomous Systems Engineer intern, you will typically engage in hands-on projects involving robotics, sensor integration, computer vision, and machine learning algorithms. You may contribute to developing, testing, and optimizing autonomous navigation systems or simulation environments. Interns often collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams of software, hardware, and systems engineers, gaining exposure to real-time problem-solving and rapid prototyping. This experience provides valuable insight into industry-standard tools and practices, setting a strong foundation for a career in autonomous systems.

What is the difference between Internship Autonomous Systems Engineer vs Internship Robotics Engineer?

About the Role

Blue Origin is seeking aSenior Perception Leadto drive the technical direction of computer vision and sensor fusion algorithm development supporting autonomous navigation, targeting, and situational awareness capabilities for next-generation space systems. As an individual contributor and technical authority, you will define the perception architecture, guide algorithm development, and ensure our autonomous systems can reliably sense, interpret, and respond to complex, dynamic environments - both on-orbit and in support of national security missions.

This is a high-impact, hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who thrives at the intersection of deep technical expertise and mission-critical influence.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the design, development, and integration of perception algorithms for autonomous navigation, targeting, and situational awareness systems
  • Architect and implement computer vision and sensor fusion pipelines leveraging data from cameras, LIDAR, RADAR, or other onboard sensors
  • Define technical strategy and roadmaps for perception subsystems, ensuring alignment with overall vehicle autonomy and mission objectives
  • Drive algorithm development for object detection, tracking, classification, and scene understanding in challenging, dynamic, and resource-constrained environments
  • Establish and enforce best practices for perception software development, testing, and verification & validation (V&V)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with autonomy, guidance navigation & control (GN&C), avionics, and systems engineering teams to integrate perception capabilities into flight systems
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SITL) testing, as well as field and flight test campaigns, to validate perception algorithm performance
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level perception engineers, fostering technical growth without formal supervisory responsibility
  • Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations to program leadership, customers, and stakeholders
  • Stay current with state-of-the-art perception, computer vision, and machine learning techniques, and assess their applicability to Blue Origin's mission needs
  • Support proposal development, technical reviews, and customer engagements as needed
