Job description

Description 1. Police Interns will report directly to the Training Coordinator, or such other employee as designated by the Chief of Police. 2.

All police internships authorized by the Chief of Police are paid positions. Police Interns will receive monetary compensation provided to them. 3.

Police interns serve at the discretion of the Chief of Police and may have their services terminated at any time without prior notice. 4. Police interns shall have their services terminated in response to any of the following events: a.

Upon being charged with any crime, disorderly persons offense or petty disorderly persons offense. b. Upon being charged with driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.

c. Upon being charged with an offense/ordinance violation when a member of this department initiates the prosecution. d.

Failure to follow a lawful order of a department supervisor. e. Unauthorized disclosure of information or departmental records.

f. Failure to complete assignments in a proper and/or timely manner. g.

Unauthorized absence from scheduled assignments. 5. Complete a written daily activity log to turn in at the completion of the internship program.

6. Abide by the rules and code of conduct as indicated by the Kearney Police Department. Essential Functions 1.

Upon commencement of the internship, Police Interns shall receive instruction on applicable policies and procedures related to their assignment. 2. Interns shall be held to the same dress regulations as other civilian employees unless otherwise directed by the Training Coordinator or his designee.

3. Interns shall serve a minimum number of hours per week as directed by requirements of their college/university, but in no case shall the service be less than eight (8) hours or more than forty (40) hours per week. Interns are not eligible for overtime benefits.

4. Interns shall be eligible for any assignment deemed appropriate by the Training Coordinator; however, in most cases the assignments will consist of light clerical work, research and assistance with cataloging property, evidence and records, ride-a-longs with officers, attend any training deemed appropriate and attend any event deemed appropriate. 5.

Interns are expected to be punctual for all assignments/appointments and are further expected to complete all assigned work in a competent and timely manner. 6. The Training Coordinator shall review all papers, journals, reports and other assignments related to the intern's service with this department prior to the completion of the internship.

Qualifications 1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a citizen of the United States or possess a valid student visa. 2.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university as a junior or senior. a. Applicants must include a resume and letter of recommendation from their advisor addressed to the Kearney Police Department.

3. If licensed to operate a vehicle, the applicant's driving privilege must be valid, and the driver's history must be free of convictions from driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs. 4.

Applicants must pass a background check including a check of their fingerprints and an inquiry through the National Crime Information Center. 5. An applicant will be declared ineligible to serve as an intern if the background check discloses any of the following: a.

A conviction for any offense involving theft or theft related statutes. b. A conviction for any offense stemming from an incident of domestic violence.

c. A conviction for any offense where the underlying actions would be incompatible with a person serving in a position of public trust, as determined by the Chief of Police. Supplemental Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Climbing/Balancing: Climb inclines and ladders, uneven surfaces, balance required Walking: Moderate amount required Stooping/Bending: Frequently Stand/Sit: Sit about 50 percent of the time Reaching: Frequent, overhead as well as horizontal Vision: 20/100 correctable to 20/20, with contact lenses no upper acuity limit correctable to 20/20 Color Vision: Ability to distinguish colors Hearing: Frequently perceive nature of sounds by ear Speech: Frequently express ideas by means of spoken words Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Frequently operates motor vehicles or bicycles requiring moderate ability Manual Dexterity: Frequently operates motor vehicles or bicycles requiring moderate ability ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Inside/Outside: Adverse conditions possible Cold/Heat: Adverse conditions possible Wet/Dry: Adverse conditions possible Noise/Vibrations: Minimal exposure Hazards: Physical confrontation, emergency response driving, traffic control, operation of firearms and foot pursuit Fumes/Dust/Odors: Moderate exposure Infectious Disease: Moderate exposure MENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Ability to read and comprehend written material.
