Job Summary:
The University of Houston is looking for a Technical Writer/Editor to join their UH Energy department. The role involves writing and editing high-level communications and publications related to complex technical and research subjects, as well as planning and executing various publications and media content.
Responsibilities:
• Writes and edits high-level communications, publications and reports with complex technical and/or research-related subject matter, including articles for print and web publications.
• Designs, research, and writes technical and research related news and feature stories for print and web.
• Determines content materials, selects and research subjects, conducts interviews and ensures accuracy of facts.
• Plans and edits research and academic themed magazines, publications, websites and electronic newsletters.
• Consults with and leads designers and photographers on overall design, execution and production of publications including mailing/distribution, posting on the web and targeting of specific audiences.
• Research university programs for potential story ideas to generate public interest; identifies appropriate outlets for specific story interests; markets story ideas and information to various internal outlets.
• Provides support for major college or department initiatives through planning, researching and writing proposals, briefing materials and reports.
• In conjunction with the Division of Marketing, assists administrators and faculty members with the composition of statements, communications, and public interviews.
• Identifies, researches and writes feature stories to highlight student and faculty success.
• Conceptualizes, scripts, and storyboards short-form and long-form video content to support storytelling initiatives; ensures clear translation of written narratives into compelling visual content.
• Researches university programs for potential story ideas to generate positive public interest and identifies appropriate outlets for specific story interests.
• Conducts interviews and thoroughly investigates selected activities to write stories for various internal publications.
• Maintains regular contact with university and college administrators concerning ongoing academic and related programs; maintains regular contact with college faculty to keep abreast of on-going research, teaching and service activities in order to generate story ideas.
• Provides work direction and guidance to interns.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline.
• Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.
• Requires a minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience.
• Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience.
