Materials & Manufacturing Process Engineer (Early Career, Exceptional Talent) About this position

Next-gen superalloys at extreme thermal limits. Additive microstructures pushed beyond known bounds. High-durability coatings for continuous, multi-year duty cycles. At Boom, you will own the hardest materials and process challenges — on day one of your career.

We hire a small number of extraordinary engineers who are ready for a much bigger challenge than most companies would give them. Many places expect you to spend years supporting work that someone else owns before you get near anything real. At Boom, entry-level Materials and Manufacturing Process Engineers are handed real scope from day one — a critical alloy qualification, an advanced heat‑treatment protocol, a joining technique or coating failure that doesn't have a solution yet, and held accountable for the outcome.

We're building two engines at once: Superpower, a 42 MW gas turbine for AI data centers, and Symphony, a medium‑bypass turbofan designed for Mach 1.7 cruise. That means creating the materials and manufacturing processes that turn ambitious designs into hardware that performs in the real world. There isn't a playbook for what we're building. You'll help create it.

This job is demanding and rewarding.

This job isn't for everyone. You're the right person if:

  • You've done something extraordinary early – built and characterized real hardware, led a competition team (Formula SAE, Baja, Rocketry) focusing on advanced materials, or done M&P lab work in an internship that most engineers don't see for years.

  • You get more energized when a problem gets harder, not less.
  • You're uncomfortable waiting for someone else to find the answer.
  • The metallurgy lab, the cleanroom, and the shop floor sound more interesting to you than a conference room.

What You'll Do

  • Own a defined piece of the Materials Process domain – material qualification, investment casing, advanced joining methods, surface coatings, or non-destructive testing – with real accountability for the outcome.
  • Interact not only across disciplines (design, propulsion and manufacturing) but also span our physical spaces from office to lab to shop floor - move from clean sheet to high‑performance hardware in hand.
  • Characterize and validate extreme-environment materials designed to withstand the brutal mechanical and thermal stresses of gas turbines and high-Mach flight programs – up to and including allowable programs.
  • Perform rapid failure analysis of testing anomalies using state-of-the-art internal labs, including SEM, to find root‑cause and iterate solutions fast via disciplined and documented methodologies.
  • Plan and execute test campaigns; everything from mechanical testing of superalloys for LCF/HCF and creep to DOEs for metallic additive to development testing of novel investment casting technologies.
  • Help scope, procure, install, and commission new equipment - then use it and train others on it

You Probably Have

  • A degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering – or equivalent hands‐on hardware experience.
  • At least one internship or co‑op where you worked with real‑world engineering materials, testing, or process characterization.
  • Hands‑on lab or shop experience – time operating mechanical test frames, metallographic sample prep equipment, heat‑treat furnaces, or additive manufacturing machines. This is required, not a nice‑to‑have.
  • A fundamental understanding of materials behavior – from microstructural strengthening and fatigue failure mechanisms to corrosion resistance and high‑temperature oxidation.
  • A track record of finishing hard things, inside school and outside of it.

Work Location

Internships require 100% onsite at Boom's headquarters located at 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112.

Compensation

The Base Salary Range for this position is $87,000 - $117,000 per year. Actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long‑term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits. Additional perks include on‑site meals and gym access.

To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
