Internship Addiction Counselor information

What is an internship addiction counselor?

Internship addiction counselors are students or recent graduates who are gaining supervised practical experience in the field of addiction counseling. They work under the guidance of licensed addiction counselors to assist clients struggling with substance use disorders. Their responsibilities typically include conducting assessments, participating in individual or group counseling sessions, and learning about treatment planning and case management. These internships are an essential step toward full licensure and professional practice as an addiction counselor.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an internship addiction counselor?

To thrive as an Internship Addiction Counselor, you need foundational knowledge in psychology or counseling, often supported by coursework in addiction studies and enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with clinical documentation systems, screening tools, and confidentiality protocols is typically expected. Excellent listening, empathy, and strong interpersonal communication skills help you build trust and support clients through recovery. These abilities are essential for providing effective care, maintaining ethical standards, and fostering positive outcomes for individuals battling addiction.

What types of supervision and support can an internship addiction counselor expect during their placement?

As an internship addiction counselor, you will typically work under the close supervision of a licensed addiction counselor or clinical supervisor. Regular one-on-one meetings and group supervision sessions are common, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities to discuss challenging client scenarios. In addition to direct supervision, you may participate in team meetings with other counselors, social workers, and healthcare professionals to coordinate care. This collaborative environment is designed to help you build practical skills, gain confidence, and ensure adherence to ethical and legal standards while supporting your professional growth.
