Job description

Summary:
The Data Analytics Intern is a member of the Finance and Business Systems team for The Surfacing Group. This development-focused internship supports financial and operational reporting during TSG's migration to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, offering hands-on experience turning raw business data into actionable insight using Power BI, Excel, and enterprise reporting tools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Promotes the Company's mission and values-based culture through a collaborative, learning-oriented approach to analytics and reporting.
  • Learns the business: develops a working understanding of TSG's business units and how orders, shipments, inventory, and financials flow through each.
  • Supports D365 Finance & Operations migration efforts, including data validation, mapping legacy data to D365 templates, and testing/reporting during rollout.
  • Assists in building and maintaining recurring financial and operational reports such as Orders, Shipments & Backlog (OSB) and month-end summaries.
  • Contributes to the design and maintenance of Power BI dashboards, including data modeling, dataset refreshes, and executive-ready visualizations.
  • Creates and refines Excel-based reports, templates, and lightweight automation to streamline recurring analysis.
  • Assists in identifying and resolving data quality issues to ensure reporting reflects accurate, trusted source data.
  • Supports the team with ad hoc analysis and special projects for finance and leadership.
  • Other duties may be assigned by Manager or Supervisor.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field (UTC student preferred).
  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, data cleanup).
  • Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail.
  • Preferred: exposure to Power BI or other data visualization tools; familiarity with SQL, Python, or database concepts; interest in ERP systems (Dynamics 365, QuickBooks).

Travel:
Primarily based at the Chattanooga, TN office.
Computer Skills:
Demonstrated proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience or interest in Power BI, Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, and data analysis tools (SQL/Python) is a plus.
Other Skills:
Eagerness to learn new tools and systems, ability to ask thoughtful questions, work independently, and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements:
Adaptability to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Excel is required; Power BI and D365 exposure preferred. Schedule is flexible around class schedule. Pay rate to be discussed with HR.
