Job description

Requisition Id 16848
Overview:
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who will focus on conceptualization, design, build, and deployment of Electromagnetic Isotope Separation (EMIS) devices through the creation of sophisticated 3D CAD models and detailed design packages suitable for fabrication. This position resides in the Plasma Enrichment Deployment & Engineering Group in the Plasma Enrichment Science & Engineering Section, Enrichment Science & Engineering Division, Isotope Science & Engineering Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
ESED stands at the forefront of the nation's isotope mission-serving as the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of enrichment technologies. At ORNL, we are internationally recognized leaders in electromagnetic enrichment technology, with a proud legacy dating back to the late 1940s. We are also the trusted stewards and dispensers of the nation's stable isotope inventory, playing a critical role in enabling scientific discovery, innovation, and national capability.
Our division delivers end-to-end expertise across the entire enrichment process-from the chemical synthesis of feed materials to the fabrication of highly customized physical forms designed to meet the unique needs of diverse user communities. This integrated capability makes our work both technically distinctive and nationally important.
As part of our team, you will collaborate with a dedicated group of scientists, technicians, and engineers tackling complex, fast-paced technical challenges in support of the DOE Isotope Program. This rapidly growing program at ORNL offers exceptional opportunities for professional development, hands-on impact, and technical leadership. Our team is energized by the significance of the work, driven by innovation, and committed to developing creative solutions to some of today's most pressing technology and process challenges. Success in advancing isotope separation technologies demands precision, ingenuity, and a relentless focus on both design excellence and the safety of our people and equipment.
This is an exciting time to join a rapidly growing program with strong opportunities for professional growth, innovation, and meaningful contribution. We're looking for people who bring creativity, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to technical excellence, safety, and a positive team-focused culture.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Conceptualize, design, develop and improve plasma-based enrichment technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (SolidWorks).
  • Create 2D drawings to be used for fabrication and communication with staff and suppliers through the fabrication and assembly process.
  • Ensures drawings and designs are in full compliance with applicable engineering codes as well as environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Direct and participate in the installation, testing and development of designed systems, equipment, and components in collaboration with team members.
  • Coordinate internal and external design reviews as well as facilitate tracking and closeout of actions taken during these reviews.
  • Produce and maintain As-Built documentation for complex systems to maintain configuration control.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote teamwork and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS degree in an engineering or related discipline with 5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Relevant experience collaborating with other designers, engineers, and scientists in the creation of 3D components, assemblies and prints from ideas, rough sketches, red lines, and notes, as this will be a regular function of the position.
  • Experience using SolidWorks 3D CAD design software.
  • Proven track record of design for Safety, design for Manufacturing and Assembly, and basic knowledge of industry best practices, tools, and technologies.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance which requires ship.
