Job description

Company Description

Big challenges need bold thinkers.

If you're someone who sees problems as opportunities, you'll thrive here. RESPEC is 100% employee-owned, which means we take ownership of every challenge. Here, your ideas drive real solutions. Since 1969, we've tackled complex challenges in energy transition, infrastructure resilience, digital transformation, and sustainability.

At RESPEC, you'll work alongside clients to take on critical problems. Depending on your expertise, you might design infrastructure in remote locations, develop renewable energy solutions for global projects, or apply data-driven technology to improve mining and water systems.

We bring deep technical knowledge, real-world experience, and a commitment to work that matters. If you're looking for a place where your contributions have real impact, you'll fit right in.

We do not accept unsolicited resumes from third-party recruiters.

Job Description

In this role, you will help maintain, enhance, troubleshoot, and modernize large-scale applications used in a government environment. The position requires deep Java and SQL experience, strong Linux skills, and the ability to lead technical analysis and coordinate development activities in a collaborative team setting.

You will contribute to application development and sustainment, database improvements, system performance, production support, technical documentation, and modernization initiatives. Your work will help support reliable, secure, and efficient public-sector services.

Core Responsibilities

The Software Developer 3 will oversee and contribute to the coding, testing, debugging, and deployment of applications based on technical and functional requirements. Responsibilities include preparing test data, developing flowcharts and technical diagrams, creating production-run instructions, and supporting end-user documentation.

You will lead research and analysis for proposed projects, application modifications, and system enhancements. The role includes evaluating database schemas, writing and executing SQL code, deploying packages and triggers, and revising programs to improve operating efficiency.

The successful candidate will diagnose application issues by analyzing logs, system messages, thread connectivity, memory utilization, disk input/output, and available disk space. You will also recommend and implement improvements to application and system performance.

Additional responsibilities include developing programming standards and procedures, creating specialized programs, maintaining backup and restoration processes, preparing technical analyses and verification procedures, coordinating programming projects, and assigning or tracking the work of other team members. You must maintain regular attendance and follow approved work hours and client policies.

Qualifications

Required Technical Experience

Candidates must meet or exceed the following minimum experience requirements:

  • 15 years: Java development experience
  • 10 years: SQL database experience
  • 8 years: Application sustainment and development supporting large applications in a team environment
  • 5 years: Linux experience

The required background should include experience with application development and maintenance, software testing and debugging, SQL development, database objects, production support, system troubleshooting, performance analysis, technical documentation, and software or systems enhancement.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • 8 years: Experience with the Atlassian tool suite, especially JIRA
  • 8 years: Experience working with Agile methodologies
  • 2 years: Experience with State of Texas applications and/or the Texas Department of Public Safety environment
  • 2 years: Experience transitioning applications from legacy mainframe environments to Java and SQL environments

Experience coordinating technical work, mentoring or directing other developers, preparing implementation documentation, and supporting business-continuity processes is also valuable.
