Job description

The University of Southern California, Gould School of Law seeks a legal director and clinical supervising attorney to establish and operate the Justice & Accountability Initiative (JAI) within the Gilbert Global Justice & Human Rights Center.

Contract: Fixed‑term, one year with renewal for up to three additional years based on funding; full‑time.

Reporting: Reports to the Center’s Faculty Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead case‑building, legal strategy and evidence collection for atrocity prevention and accountability projects.
  • Develop intergovernmental, government and private sector partnerships.
  • Manage legal work and supervise students in the International Human Rights Clinic.
  • Mentor students pursuing careers in human rights and international criminal justice; facilitate placement in internships and externships.
  • Design and teach Executive Education and CLE‑accredited courses for professionals.
  • Conduct research and advance legislation and policies on accountability, prevention and transitional justice.
  • Lead high‑level convenings to advance thought leadership on atrocity justice.
  • Support fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations to grow the Center.
  • Assist with final exam administration, proctoring, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA‑accredited U.S. law school.
  • Excellent academic record with focus on international criminal law and human rights.
  • California Bar membership or other U.S. bar certification.
  • Five to seven years of litigation experience in atrocity or serious human rights abuses (e.g., ICJ, ICC, national courts).
  • Proven collaboration with local counsel, law firms or human rights organizations.
  • Experience supervising junior attorneys (≥2 years).
  • Strong management and organizational skills.
  • Public speaking experience on legal and policy issues.
  • Project development experience with an emphasis on corporate accountability, gender‑based violence, or refugee protection.
  • Clinical legal education or teaching experience.
  • Advanced degree(s) in international law or human rights.
  • Experience in a university setting.
  • Fundraising experience.
  • Legal publications.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.

Salary: $143,193.60 – $180,000.00 (annual base).
