Job description

Building the commercial brokerage of the future. Summit is a boutique commercial insurance firm headquartered in Kelowna and serving businesses across Canada. We are a venture-backed, tech-enabled commercial insurance brokerage redefining what it means to be a modern insurance partner. With strong valuesโ€” Sustainability, Ownership, Transparency, and Impact โ€”we move fast, support one another, and raise the bar for industry standards.

Summit is a team of empowered and high-performing individuals who live our core values every day. Being a part of Summit offers a chance for the right applicant to make a name for themselves, and help build Summit as a leader in the Canadian Commercial Insurance market.

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in scaling our core proprietary platforms. As an early and critical engineering hire, you will take deep technical ownership of complex workstreams, collaborate directly with leadership to guide architectural decisions, and accelerate our development throughput. By understanding the why behind what you're building and taking a low-ego, best-idea-wins approach, you'll directly shape our scalable architecture.

  • Drive the day-to-day execution, technical guidance, and feature development of our core software platforms, making the process of onboarding new insurance products seamless, scalable, and self-sufficient.
  • Take complete end-to-end ownership of development tasks from initial architecture discussion through to delivery, ensuring your output actively absorbs operational weight from leadership.
  • Provide technical mentorship and support to junior engineering team members, systematically upskilling others to build longโ€‘term organizational capacity.
  • Champion transparent and proactive communication by providing regular updates, raising risk warnings early, and approaching technical roadblocks with solutionโ€‘oriented recommendations.
  • Translate complex technical concepts effortlessly for nonโ€‘technical stakeholders, serving as an engineering partner who actively participates in technical brainstorming and constructive code debates.
  • Regularly audit and iterate on existing product codebases to ensure structural sustainability, performance excellence, and longโ€‘term maintainability.
Skills & Qualifications Mustโ€‘Haves
  • 3 to 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally within a startup or scaleโ€‘up environment where you have worn multiple hats.
  • Proven track record of taking complete features or products from concept to production, with a strong businessโ€‘focused mindset that assesses if something is the right tool to build for commercial impact.
  • Exceptional, highโ€‘context communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to educate, influence, and align with nonโ€‘technical business leaders.
  • Exceptional alignment with an ownership mindset: low ego, candid when navigating ambiguity, and eager to participate in rigorous technical discussions where the best idea wins.
  • Stable home office setup with highโ€‘speed internet capability for remoteโ€‘eligible days, paired with a commitment to collaborate inโ€‘office 3 days a week.
Niceโ€‘toโ€‘Haves
  • Strong handsโ€‘on experience or familiarity with our core asset stack: TypeScript, React, NestJS, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Direct exposure to the Insurtech space or a solid understanding of foundational insurance concepts (e.g., policies, endorsements, binds).
  • Experience working with modern operational tools such as Rippling, HubSpot, or automated workplace workflows.
  • Opportunity for Growth Work with a forwardโ€‘thinking commercial brokerage and be part of an innovative, growing team.
  • Modern Workspace Work from our brandโ€‘new, stateโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘art offices in downtown Kelowna and Winnipeg. Enjoy a flexible hybrid model designed to support collaboration, focus, and balance.
  • Technologyโ€‘Driven Culture Work with cuttingโ€‘edge tools and custom built technology to get time back in your day. Laptops & equipment provided to all staff.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Access to flexible health, mental health, dental plans tailored to your lifestyle, and competitive vacation and personal day allotments.
  • Supportive Team Participate in daily team huddles and collaborative events as part of a valuesโ€‘driven culture.
Our Values
  • Transparency We build trust through open and honest communication.
  • Sustainability We create lasting solutions for our team, partnerships, and communities.
  • Ownership We take accountability for our actions, celebrate victories, and learn from mistakes.
  • Impact We think big and aim to make a difference in everything we do, both in business and for social good.

Summit is an inclusive employer that celebrates diversity. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates and are committed to providing accommodations during the hiring process. While we thank all applicants for their interest, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Compensation: $100,000 - $160,000 OTE
