Internal Developer Tools Software Engineer information

What is an internal developer tools software engineer?

Internal Developer Tools Software Engineers are specialists who design, build, and maintain software tools that improve the productivity of other developers within an organization. Their work often includes creating build systems, continuous integration pipelines, testing frameworks, and deployment tools. These engineers collaborate closely with development teams to understand their workflows and challenges, then develop solutions that streamline processes, reduce manual work, and enhance code quality. By focusing on internal tooling, they help the whole engineering organization move faster and deliver higher-quality products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internal developer tools software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internal Developer Tools Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, Java, or Go), expertise in software development processes, and experience with building scalable infrastructure, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with CI/CD systems, containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), version control (such as Git), and cloud platforms is usually required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and proactive communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for designing efficient tools that improve developer productivity, streamline workflows, and support organizational engineering goals.

How do internal developer tools software engineers typically interact with other development teams within the company?

Internal Developer Tools Software Engineers work closely with a variety of engineering teams to understand their workflows, gather feedback, and identify pain points in the development process. Communication is key, as these engineers often facilitate onboarding, provide training for new tools, and respond to support requests. Collaboration usually involves participating in cross-team meetings, collecting requirements, and iterating on tools based on real-world usage. This close partnership ensures that the tools developed genuinely improve productivity and address the practical needs of their colleagues.

Job description

We build customer-facing command and control software for high-altitude balloon systems. Our users are trained operators-primarily U.S. military and internal flight operations teams-who rely on our tools to make real-world decisions. Aerostar, a business unit of TCOM, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help design and build production-grade single-page applications and the services that power them.
This role focuses on delivering high-quality, maintainable software across the full stack. You will contribute to the design and implementation of complex web applications that integrate real-time telemetry, operational data, and mission workflows. While you will have opportunities to influence technical decisions, your primary focus will be building robust systems and contributing to a strong engineering culture.
You will work across frontend and backend systems, partnering with other engineers to deliver scalable, reliable solutions and continuously improve the quality of the codebase.
Relocation may be available.
What You'll Do:
  • Design and implement key components of complex, data-driven single-page applications
  • Build backend services, APIs, and data flows that support real-time telemetry and operational workflows
  • Contribute to technical design discussions for full-stack features
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code across the stack
  • Identify and address performance, reliability, and maintainability issues
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teammates to deliver high-quality software

What We're Looking For:
You are an experienced engineer who can independently deliver complex features and systems.
You have contributed to the design and implementation of production software and understand the tradeoffs behind engineering decisions.
You enjoy solving challenging technical problems and collaborating with other engineers to build better systems.
You are pragmatic, detail-oriented, and focused on delivering working software that meets user needs.
You can write software without the assistance of AI but are open to using it to enhance your toolset.
Education & Experience:
  • Experienced engineer with 5+ years of career experience, with bachelor's degree in software engineering or 3+ years' experience with
master's degree. Or experience in lieu of education.

Preferred Experience:
  • Python familiarity
  • TypeScript
  • Complex data visualization
  • Contributing to design systems
  • Working on operational or decision-support tools

How We Work:
We are not a startup, but we operate with ownership and technical rigor.
We are building serious aerospace systems, and we expect strong engineering discipline.
Strong preference for onsite collaboration. Hybrid may be considered. Remote candidates will not be prioritized.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
  • Working Conditions: Primarily in a standard office environment, with occasional exposure to production areas, including noise, fumes, moving machinery, and varying temperatures.

Benefits:
TCOM offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts/HSAs, EAP, tuition reimbursement, parental leave, paid time off (PTO), and company-paid holidays. Programs and eligibility may vary based on hire date, classification, and schedule.
Equal Opportunity Employer/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities
This employer is required to notify all applicants of their rights pursuant to federal employment laws. For further information, please review the Know Your Rights notice from the Department of Labor.
