Description
Be a Part of Something that Matters
About WECC
WECC promotes the reliability and security of the bulk power system in the Western Interconnection. WECC is the Regional Entity responsible for compliance monitoring and enforcement and oversees reliability planning and assessments. In addition, WECC provides an environment for the development of Reliability Standards and the coordination of the operating and planning activities of its members as set forth in the WECC Bylaws.
There are six Regional Entities given authority by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Of those six entities, WECC oversees the largest and most geographically diverse region, known as the Western Interconnection. WECC's footprint extends from Canada to Mexico and includes the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, the northern portion of Baja California, Mexico, and all or portions of the 14 Western states between.
About the Program
The goal of the WECC Internship Program is to offer challenging and meaningful experiences to students.
The WECC Internship Program seeks to provide each intern with:
  • Challenging work that will support both the student's academic needs and WECC's strategic priorities
  • An intern supervisor who provides continuous leadership, performance feedback, and coaching
  • Opportunities for cross-functional experiences
  • Access and exposure to members of WECC's senior leadership team
  • Opportunities to "shadow" select staff members to gain exposure to day-to-day functions

WECC seeks to identify individuals who embody our Core Values:
  • Our people and our work matter.
  • Everyone is invited to be a leader.
  • Independence, perspective, and partnership are how we add value.
  • Intellectual curiosity, empowerment, and accountability fuel meaningful results.
  • Continuous improvement and innovation are essential.
  • We act with intention and focused urgency in everything we do.

Internship Opportunity: Reliability Engineer
WECC is seeking a reliability engineer intern to serve as a functioning team member to help identify reliability trends in the western interconnection from multiple data sets and help implement improvements to WECC's data, processes, or tools as needed.
The reliability engineer internship would include:
  • Working with WECC's PI system to help gather and organize data points, apply a common naming convention, and help build processes and tools
  • Working with other internal departments to gather external data sets, validate the data, and perform analysis to determine reliability trends about the operation of the Western Interconnection
  • Helping evaluate WECC's planning cases to determine and implement any updates

The reliability engineer will work with various departments, giving the intern wide exposure to the organization. The reliability engineer can expect to gain an intimate understanding of WECC's Reliability Planning and Performance Analysis department and directly influence how the Western Interconnection maintains reliability.
Requirements
You will enjoy this role if you-
  • Have completed your junior year of your bachelor's degree by May 18, 2026
  • Are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in engineering
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0

  • Are highly motivated and ready for challenges
  • Possess strong computer literacy and proficiency using PCs, including a working knowledge of common applications such as those in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understand and adhere to sound principles of cybersecurity, including protecting sensitive information, using secure passwords, and following organizational cybersecurity protocols

Internship Compensation, Duration, and Location

This is a 10-week position, with a minimum of 30 hours per week. The internship is scheduled to start June 22, 2026, and end Aug 28, 2026, with potential for flexibility in the start and end dates.
This role may be performed remotely, though candidates based in or near Salt Lake City, Utah, are preferred to accommodate occasional in-person meetings.
