Intern Tooling Engineer information

What does an intern tooling engineer do?

An Intern Tooling Engineer assists in the design, development, and maintenance of tools, fixtures, and equipment used in manufacturing or software development processes. Their tasks often include supporting senior engineers in creating technical drawings, testing and troubleshooting tools, and ensuring that all tooling meets quality and safety standards. This position gives interns hands-on experience with engineering software, manufacturing processes, and problem-solving in a real-world setting. They may also collaborate with various teams to improve efficiency and learn about the full product lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern tooling engineer?

To thrive as an Intern Tooling Engineer, you typically need a background in mechanical or manufacturing engineering, with knowledge of CAD design and basic machining principles. Familiarity with tools such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD and exposure to manufacturing systems or CNC programming are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you contribute effectively in a team environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing, improving, and troubleshooting tooling solutions that enhance production efficiency and product quality.

How does an intern tooling engineer typically collaborate with other teams during their internship?

As an Intern Tooling Engineer, you’ll work closely with software developers, QA engineers, and DevOps teams to understand their needs and ensure the tools you help build or maintain effectively support their workflows. Regular meetings, code reviews, and feedback sessions are common, allowing you to learn best practices and understand cross-functional project requirements. This collaborative environment provides excellent exposure to various aspects of the engineering process, helping you develop both technical and communication skills essential for future growth.

Job description

About Fooji

Fooji is a marketing engagement platform that powers promotional campaigns and gift/prize fulfillment for brands. Our engineering team builds and maintains backend infrastructure, third-party integrations, and APIs that support high-traffic consumer campaigns - from messaging and identity verification to logistics and creator/influencer tooling.

About the Role

We're looking for a motivated tech intern to join our engineering team for the Fall semester. You'll work directly with our engineering team on real, production-facing features - not busywork. Recent projects on the team have included creator search infrastructure, AWS messaging systems (SMS/MMS/RCS), API integrations with third-party enrichment platforms, and backend data pipelines.

This role is a great fit for a student who wants hands-on experience with modern cloud infrastructure, API design, and AI-assisted software development in a fast-moving startup environment.

What You'll Do
  • Assist in building and testing backend services in Node.js/TypeScript
  • Work with AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS/PostgreSQL, EventBridge, SNS, and others) under senior engineer guidance
  • Help integrate and test third-party APIs (webhook-based enrichment services, messaging platforms, identity verification, shipping/logistics)
  • Write and troubleshoot SQL queries against PostgreSQL databases
  • Participate in code review and contribute to our engineering documentation and internal tooling
  • Use AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) as part of your daily workflow - we're an AI-forward team and expect interns to be comfortable pairing with these tools

Requirements

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled full-time or within 2 years of graduation
  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Hands-on experience with an AI coding assistant (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) - comfortable using these tools to accelerate development, not just for autocomplete
  • Some coursework or project experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, or general backend development
  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub
  • Able to work Eastern Time Zone business hours
  • Strong communication skills and comfort asking questions - we move fast and value people who speak up when something's unclear
Nice to Have (not required)
  • Exposure to AWS or another cloud provider
  • Coursework involving APIs, databases, or distributed systems
  • Personal projects, hackathon experience, or open-source contributions

Benefits

Why Intern at Fooji
  • Direct mentorship from engineers working on production systems used by major brands
  • Exposure to real cloud architecture decisions, not toy projects
  • A team culture that treats AI tools as a core part of the craft, not a shortcut to avoid learning
  • Potential path to future opportunities based on performance
