Job description

Company Overview

Sentient Digital, Inc. (SDi) is an engineering and technology company specializing in undersea warfare and maritime security solutions. With expertise spanning acoustics, digital signal processing, and mission systems integration, SDi develops proprietary products and provides deep engineering expertise that address the most complex challenges facing defense and security customers. Headquartered in Brunswick, Maine, SDi serves customers across the Department of Defense and allied nations.

Description

We are seeking a summer intern to help us modernize our month-end close process. Today, closing the books involves manual exports from our ERP, bank portals, and credit card statements, with reconciliation done largely in spreadsheets. We want to validate our closing procedures documentation, identify steps that can be simplified or automated, and build internal tooling to streamline account reconciliation.

This is a hands-on role at the intersection of accounting and software development. You'll spend real time with our accounting team understanding how closes actually happen, then work with our portal development team to design and build automation that fits the way the work is really done - not how someone outside the process imagines it.

This role suits a student who's genuinely curious about both sides - someone who finds debits and credits interesting and enjoys writing code. You don't need to be expert in either, but you need real interest in both.

Our tech stack (what you'd be learning or working with)

Java 17 / Spring Boot, React 18, PostgreSQL, deployed on Azure. We use industry-standard tools (Maven, Git, GitHub Actions). You don't need to know any of these coming in - we'll teach you what you need. What we can't teach as easily is the accounting judgment that makes automation actually useful, which is why we're looking for someone with real interest in the accounting side.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and validating our existing month-end close process and procedures documentation
  • Identifying manual steps that are good candidates for automation or simplification
  • Helping design and build a reconciliation tool that handles credit cards, bank accounts, AP, and other GL accounts, with the ability to carry unreconciled transactions forward month to month
  • Working alongside accounting staff to make sure what gets built actually matches how reconciliations need to work
  • Learning Costpoint (Deltek's ERP for government contractors) from the inside as you go

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Accounting, Finance, Business, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Solid understanding of basic accounting concepts (general ledger, accounts payable, bank reconciliation, journal entries) - coursework counts; experience is a plus
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets at a meaningful level (formulas, pivot tables, data cleanup)
  • Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and accounting workflows in parallel
  • Ability to work on-site in our Brunswick, Maine office

Desired Qualifications

  • Programming experience in any language - Java, JavaScript/React, Python, SQL all useful
  • Familiarity with relational databases or SQL queries
  • Exposure to Deltek Costpoint or similar ERP systems
  • Prior bookkeeping, accounting, or finance internship experience

Additional Information

Candidates must be willing to submit to a background check prior to employment.

Physical requirements for this position include the ability to lift 25 pounds regularly, the ability to move safely in confined spaces, the ability to wear personal protective gear correctly when needed, the ability to go onsite to company and customer worksites, the ability to remain seated for extended periods of time, the ability to use a computer keyboard, and the ability to see and respond to dangerous situations when needed.

Sentient Digital, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
