Intern Solidworks Designer information

What does an intern Solidworks designer do?

An Intern Solidworks Designer assists engineering teams by creating and modifying 3D models and technical drawings using Solidworks software. Their responsibilities often include supporting product development, performing design revisions, and preparing documentation for manufacturing. Interns gain hands-on experience with CAD software, learn industry standards, and collaborate with engineers to ensure design accuracy. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in mechanical design or related fields.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an intern Solidworks designer expect during their internship?

As an Intern Solidworks Designer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks ranging from creating and modifying 3D models to assisting with design documentation and product development. You'll often collaborate closely with engineers and senior designers, contributing to real-world projects under their guidance. Common responsibilities include preparing technical drawings, running simulations, and making design revisions based on feedback. This hands-on experience not only builds your technical skills in Solidworks but also helps you develop an understanding of industry standards and teamwork in a professional design environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern Solidworks designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Solidworks Designer, you need a solid understanding of mechanical design principles, basic engineering coursework, and proficiency in Solidworks, often supported by enrollment in or completion of a relevant technical degree. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling, and drafting standards is typically required, and certification such as CSWA (Certified SolidWorks Associate) can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help interns excel in collaborative engineering environments. These skills ensure accurate design work, effective teamwork, and valuable contributions to product development projects.

What is the difference between Intern Solidworks Designer vs Intern Mechanical Drafter?

AspectIntern Solidworks DesignerIntern Mechanical Drafter
Required SkillsSolidworks proficiency, basic engineering knowledgeDrafting skills, knowledge of CAD software
Work EnvironmentDesign departments, engineering firmsDesign offices, manufacturing companies
Typical TasksCreating 3D models, assisting in design developmentPreparing technical drawings, modifying CAD drafts
Common Industry UsageProduct design, engineering projectsManufacturing, construction, mechanical design

Intern Solidworks Designers and Intern Mechanical Drafters often work in similar environments and require CAD skills. However, Solidworks Designers focus more on 3D modeling and design development, while Mechanical Drafters concentrate on creating detailed technical drawings. Both roles serve essential functions in engineering and manufacturing industries, with overlapping skills but distinct primary responsibilities.

Job description

Description:

Depatie Fluid Power is seeking an Engineering Intern to join our engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for a student looking to gain real-world experience in product development, mechanical design, manufacturing support, and engineering documentation within a collaborative manufacturing environment.

We are not looking for someone who already knows everything about our products—we can teach product knowledge. What we're looking for is someone who is eager to learn, takes initiative, embraces new technology, works hard, and enjoys solving problems.

If you're curious, motivated, and excited to apply what you've learned in the classroom to real engineering projects, we'd love to hear from you.

Requirements:

What You'll Do

As an Engineering Intern, you will support our engineering team throughout the product development process while gaining hands-on experience in design, testing, manufacturing, and customer support.

You will:

• Assist with mechanical product development from concept through production
• Interact with customers to better understand application requirements
• Help develop and manage engineering requirements
• Create and modify 2D and 3D CAD models using SolidWorks
• Produce engineering drawings and technical documentation
• Participate in mechanical design reviews, analysis, troubleshooting, and design improvements
• Build, assemble, and test prototypes and pre-production products
• Assist with product testing, verification, and validation activities
• Help maintain engineering lab equipment and testing infrastructure
• Support manufacturing by designing assembly fixtures and test fixtures
• Develop standard work instructions, manufacturing processes, test procedures, and control plans
• Provide technical support to production teams when needed
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, and Operations
• Learn industry best practices while contributing to meaningful engineering projects

What You'll Accomplish

• Gain valuable hands-on engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
• Learn the complete product development lifecycle
• Develop SolidWorks CAD and mechanical design skills
• Build experience with engineering documentation and testing
• Work alongside experienced engineers on real customer projects
• Strengthen your problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities
• Make meaningful contributions that directly impact customer success and company growth

What We're Looking For

• Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering degree program
• Strong desire to learn and continuously improve
• Self-motivated with excellent initiative and work ethic
• Comfortable learning new technology, software, and engineering tools
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Positive, professional attitude with a customer-focused mindset

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software
• Familiarity with engineering drawings and mechanical design principles
• Interest in manufacturing, product development, hydraulics, automation, or industrial equipment
• Experience with prototype building, machining, or hands-on mechanical projects is a plus

Why Join Depatie Fluid Power?
