Job description

The Digital Sector at Leidos is seeking an Application Developer Intern to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for a student to gain hands-on experience developing cloud-based applications and contact center solutions that support federal government customers. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn new technologies including cloud computing, software development, AWS, automation, and modern application development, someone who is comfortable asking questions, and building solutions that support government missions.
As an intern, you will work alongside experienced software engineers, cloud architects, and DevSecOps professionals to design, develop, test, and maintain applications built on Amazon Web Services (AWS). You will gain exposure to modern cloud technologies, including Amazon Connect, AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Python, and serverless application development while contributing to real-world customer solutions.
This internship provides an opportunity to learn industry best practices in Agile software development, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, CI/CD automation, and application modernization in a collaborative team environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Assist with developing and maintaining cloud-based applications using Python.
  • Support the development and enhancement of Amazon Connect contact center solutions.
  • Develop and test AWS Lambda functions and REST APIs.
  • Assist with troubleshooting application issues and implementing bug fixes.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code under the guidance of senior developers.
  • Assist with unit testing and integration testing of application components.
  • Learn and apply AWS best practices for security, scalability, and reliability.
  • Work with Git and CI/CD pipelines to support software deployments.
  • Collaborate with developers, architects, testers, and business analysts on project tasks.
  • Document technical designs, code changes, and implementation details.
  • Continuously learn new technologies and contribute ideas for improving development processes.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Basic programming experience with Python through coursework, internships, or personal projects.
  • Fundamental understanding of object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
  • Basic understanding of REST APIs and web application development.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing concepts; exposure to AWS through coursework or personal projects is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required government security clearances, if applicable.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Exposure to AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, or CloudWatch.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Connect or an interest in contact center technologies.
  • Experience using Python frameworks such as Flask or FastAPI.
  • Knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, or React.
  • Understanding of SQL or NoSQL databases.
  • Experience using Docker or containerized development.
  • Exposure to Agile or Scrum software development methodologies.
  • Experience with GitHub or Azure DevOps.
  • Familiarity with automated testing concepts.
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner certification or coursework toward AWS certifications.
  • Demonstrated passion for learning new technologies through personal projects, hackathons, GitHub contributions, or coursework.
