What does an intern programmer do?

An Intern Programmer assists software development teams by writing, testing, and debugging code under supervision. They typically work on small tasks or parts of larger projects to gain experience and learn industry practices. Intern Programmers may also participate in code reviews, attend team meetings, and document their work. The role is designed to help students or recent graduates develop practical programming skills and gain insight into professional workflows.

What types of projects can an intern programmer expect to work on, and how are tasks typically assigned?

As an Intern Programmer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks ranging from debugging existing code to developing small features or tools under the guidance of a mentor. Assignments are usually based on your current skill set and learning goals, with regular check-ins to ensure progress and provide support. Interns often collaborate closely with other developers, participate in team meetings, and may contribute to larger projects as their confidence grows. This structure helps interns build practical experience while contributing meaningfully to the team's objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Programmer, you typically need a foundational understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving skills, and coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with software development tools, version control systems like Git, and basic debugging techniques is also expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively help an intern stand out. These skills ensure that the intern can contribute effectively to development projects while adapting quickly to new technologies and team dynamics.

Electrical Intern

Spaceium

Internship

Job description

At Spaceium, we are building spacecraft systems designed to push the boundaries of what's possible in orbit. As an Electrical Intern, you will work alongside our electrical engineering team on real spacecraft hardware. This is a hands-on role where you will contribute directly to the design, testing, and integration of electrical and electronic systems for our missions.

Responsibilities
  • Support schematic capture and PCB layout for spacecraft avionics
  • Assist with harness design, wiring, and integration
  • Help bring up, test, and debug electronic boards and subsystems
  • Support electrical testing including power, signal integrity, and functional tests
  • Contribute to documentation, test reports, and design reviews
  • Assist with lab setup, instrumentation, and test equipment
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineers
Basic Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Familiarity with basic electronics, circuit analysis, and lab instrumentation
  • Exposure to at least one programming language (Python, C, or C++)
  • Eagerness to learn and work in a fast-paced startup environment
What We're Looking For

We're building technology that hasn't been done before. Experience is helpful, but curiosity, drive, and the ability to learn quickly matter more. If you're excited about spacecraft, enjoy solving hard engineering problems, and want to help build something new, we encourage you to apply.

Preferred Skills
  • Creative problem solver with strong first-principles thinking, capable of assessing risk and making decisions with limited data.
  • Experience in a nimble, technical engineering role, with a scrappy, entrepreneurial approach to meeting tight time or budget constraints.
  • Hands-on experience with personal or academic electronics projects
  • Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
  • Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, or embedded systems
  • Comfort with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and lab test equipment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Additional Requirements
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones.
  • This role requires a physical presence at the Ottawa facility.

Please submit any exciting project that you have worked on.ย
