Job description

About Electrified Thermal Solutions Boilers, furnaces, and kilns are the engines of our industrial economy, providing heat to melt steel, form cement, and transform chemicals. Historically, reaching this high-temperature heat required burning fossil fuels, making the industrial sector responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Electrified Thermal Solutions has a simple and massive goal: to electrify industry.

To do this, we are building the Joule Hive thermal battery (JHTB): an energy storage technology that converts and stores cheap, renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. Our vision is to mitigate gigatons of CO2 emissions per year by deploying the Joule Hive at every industrial furnace, turbine, boiler, and kiln.

About the Role:

As a Design Engineering Intern, you will join our engineering team and play a pivotal role in scaling up our 1 MW Commercial Demonstration Product System to a First-of-a-Kind flagship Joule Hive product. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on a cutting-edge project in renewable energy technology. You will report to the Lead Structural Design Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Own the specification, design and optimization of a critical sub-assembly within a commercial Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system

  • Generate parts, assemblies, and drawings within CAD in collaboration with internal and external partners

  • Leverage engineering analysis and simulation methods to inform design decisions impacting R&D prototyping and final product design

  • Maintenance of detailed documentation throughout project work - including design specifications, CAD models, simulation results, and test reports.

  • Regular progress updates and technical reports to project stakeholders

About You:
  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Proficiency in CAD software, such as SolidWorks or Onshape

  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and other tools for analytical means.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Familiarity with Python or Matlab is a plus.

  • Experience with renewable energy systems, thermal energy storage, or extreme temperature systems is a plus.

Our Values:

As a growing startup, we value executing through uncertainty and moving towards the problem. We also recognize that structure is support and adhere processes to keep us safe and make us effective. ETS can only achieve our goals if we go together, and value and proactively draw on the diverse backgrounds, skill sets, and perspectives of our growing team. Each day, we work to live sustainably, not only to build a sustainable future, but also to create an environment where our employees lead full multi-dimensional lives.

ETS believes people are the catalyst for success and seek those with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to maximize our impact.  We know great solutions and innovation can come from anywhere and prioritize hiring people with the ability to work on diverse teams and with a diverse range of people. ETS is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and work environment and we are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
