Intern Look Development Artist information

What is an intern look development artist?

Intern Look Development Artists are entry-level professionals or students who assist in the process of defining the visual appearance of 3D assets in animation, film, or gaming projects. Their responsibilities typically include helping to create and refine textures, shaders, and materials to ensure models look realistic or match the desired artistic style. Interns often work under the guidance of senior artists to learn industry-standard tools and techniques, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to the visual storytelling of a project.

What does an intern look development artist do?

As an Intern Look Development Artist, you can expect to assist with creating and refining the visual style of assets such as characters, props, and environments by working closely with senior look development artists and supervisors. You'll often be tasked with applying textures, developing shaders, and rendering test images to ensure assets meet artistic and technical standards. Collaboration with modeling, lighting, and compositing teams is common, providing valuable exposure to multiple stages of the production pipeline. This hands-on experience not only builds your technical skills but also offers insight into the creative decision-making process within a professional studio environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an intern look development artist?

To thrive as an Intern Look Development Artist, you need a solid understanding of 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and shading, often supported by a background in computer graphics or digital art. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Maya, Houdini, Substance Painter, and rendering engines like Arnold or RenderMan is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills are highly valued for collaborating with other artists and departments. These skills ensure that visual assets are both technically sound and artistically appealing, contributing to the overall quality of animation or visual effects projects.
