What is an intern lawyer?

Intern lawyers are law students or recent graduates who work under the supervision of licensed attorneys to gain practical legal experience. They assist with tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, attending court hearings, and client interviews. Internships can be paid or unpaid and are typically part of a law school's curriculum or a stepping stone to full-time employment. The experience helps interns develop essential legal skills, build professional networks, and gain insight into various areas of law.

What does an intern lawyer do?

As an Intern Lawyer, you can expect to assist with legal research, draft documents such as memos and briefs, and help prepare case files for court proceedings or client meetings. You'll often observe client consultations, participate in team meetings, and may have opportunities to shadow attorneys during hearings or negotiations. The role involves close collaboration with associates and partners, providing valuable exposure to real-world legal practice while developing both technical and soft skills essential for your future career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern lawyer?

To thrive as an Intern Lawyer, you need a solid understanding of legal principles, research and writing skills, and typically must be enrolled in or have completed a law degree program. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, Microsoft Office, and sometimes case management software is beneficial. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively are standout soft skills. These competencies are crucial for supporting attorneys, producing accurate legal work, and progressing in a competitive legal environment.
