Position Summary:

The Chemist/QA Lab Intern supports daily laboratory operations and quality activities within a manufacturing environment. This role is ideal for a college student pursuing a degree in Chemistry or equivalent who is interested in gaining hands-on experience in laboratory testing, quality systems, data management, and continuous improvement.

The Chemist/QA Lab Intern will assist the Quality Assurance team with routine testing, documentation, sample preparation, organization, and general support activities that help ensure products meet company and customer quality standards. This position offers practical experience in laboratory operations, manufacturing quality systems, and technical problem-solving.

Internship Details:

  • Hours: M – F approximately 5 hours per day (25 hrs./wk.). Flexible scheduling between 7:30am – 3:00pm
  • Compensation: $20.00 per hour
  • Reports to: QA Supervisor

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine laboratory tests under supervision including sieve analysis, viscosity/flow testing, TGA/DSC, oxygen determination via inert gas fusion, and other standard quality checks
  • Assist with preparing samples for chemical or materials analysis and organizing tested materials.
  • Strictly follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and housekeeping standards
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional laboratory and work area
  • Follow company quality procedures and work instructions
  • Accurately record test data in spreadsheets, databases, laboratory records, and quality systems.
  • Scan, file, organize, and maintain batch sheets, quality records, and laboratory documentation
  • Help maintain electronic files and naming systems for production and quality records
  • Support electronic file management, naming conventions, logs, tracking sheets, and quality databases
  • Assist with inventory checks, stock verification, and organization of lab materials and supplies
  • Provide general support to production & quality teams as directed
  • Support improvement projects involving data collection, data organization, and workflow improvements
  • Adhere to Fusion's Quality Policy, ISO 9001 standards, and established procedures; actively seek opportunities for continuous process improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the QA Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program, pursuing a degree in Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to quickly learn technical processes, laboratory procedures, and safety protocols
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, punctuality, and willingness to assist where needed with a collaborative team mindset.
  • Ability to work independently after receiving training

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This role is performed in a laboratory and light manufacturing environment. The employee must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely work around industrial materials and equipment.
