Intern Investigator information

What is an intern investigator?

Intern Investigators are students or early-career professionals who work, often temporarily, with law firms, public defender offices, private investigation firms, or government agencies to assist with investigative tasks. Their responsibilities typically include gathering facts, interviewing witnesses, conducting research, and preparing reports to support legal cases or investigations. This role provides hands-on experience and valuable insight into the legal and investigative fields, often serving as a stepping stone toward a career in law or criminal justice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern investigator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Investigator, you need strong research, analytical, and written communication skills, often supported by coursework or experience in criminal justice, law, or social sciences. Familiarity with case management systems, public records databases, and common office software like Microsoft Office is typically required. Attention to detail, discretion, and interpersonal skills set standout candidates apart when interviewing witnesses or handling sensitive information. These skills ensure thorough, accurate investigations and effective teamwork in support of legal defense or compliance processes.

What types of cases or assignments might an intern investigator typically work on, and how does this experience contribute to their career development?

As an Intern Investigator, you'll often be assigned to support full-time investigators on a variety of cases, such as gathering witness statements, conducting field interviews, reviewing documents, and assisting with background checks. These assignments provide hands-on exposure to investigative techniques, legal procedures, and case management, which are valuable for those considering careers in law, criminal justice, or public defense. Collaboration with attorneys, clients, and other staff is common, helping you develop strong communication and teamwork skills. This practical experience can significantly enhance your resume and provide a clear pathway for advancement into full-time investigative or legal roles.
