Job description

Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB), an arts education nonprofit with a mission to transform lives by providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences, invites Berklee Music Therapy majors (current student or recent graduate) to apply to our music therapy internship program.

This internship offers opportunities to work in both community-based groups (Boston Public Schools, community-based day supports, skilled nursing facilities, and early intervention and family support sites) and in individual music therapy sessions at our location in the South End of Boston. Interns will have the opportunity to work not only alongside music therapists but also collaborate with music instructors and educator and engage and plan with site-based staff to support for each of our program sites. Interns will learn through a blend of clinical observation, independent and co-facilitation, and professional development opportunities in addition to being encouraged to independently pursue learning of their topics of their own interest. Lastly, this opportunity includes a stipend for living expenses.

Status: Intern with stipend eligibility, full-time (40 hours per week) preferred

Start Date: January 2027

Schedule: In-person, Monday - Friday, requires completion of 1000 clinical hours over a consecutive 6-9 month period

Reports to: Internship Director / Director of Programming, Community Engagement 

Responsibilities

  • Create and follow a learning contract to track progress and identify goals
  • Perform clinical observation, in accordance with AMTA internship guidelines
  • Facilitate and/or co-facilitate individual and group music therapy sessions
  • Create clinical documentation and participate in administration
  • Attend and participate in educational opportunities, such as CMCB-hosted professional development workshops
  • Collaborate and communicate with CMCB staff and faculty, in addition to external partners
  • Complete a cumulative project in one of the following fields: advocacy and outreach, music therapy pilot group, case study, or research

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must be Berklee Music Therapy major in good standing (current student or recent graduate)
  • Alignment with the values and mission of community music therapy
  • Must be comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
  • Ability to take initiative in learning with motivation to learn how to work independently at a site
  • Strong time management skills
  • Proficiency in clinical singing, guitar, and piano
  • Experience working with one or more of the following populations: early intervention children and toddlers, children with disabilities, adolescents with behavioral & mental health support needs, adults with disabilities, adults with age-related disorder and diagnoses (ie: Parkinson's, Alzheimers)
  • Proficiency in Google Suite
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and in a timely manner with CMCB administrators over work channels (Gmail, Slack, phone), during working hours

Preferred

  • Proficiency in additional instruments such as ukulele, percussion, electric guitar, and bass
  • Basic knowledge of music production applications or technology
  • Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese, Creole, French, or ASL.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the person in this position must be able to to remain in a stationary position 50-75% of the time. They need to occasionally move around the space to access teaching supplies and instruments and must be able to use a variety of instruments. They must also converse with clients in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume. They may occasionally move or transport supplies and instruments up to 10 pounds.
