Job description

J-1 Hospitality Trainee / Intern - Food & Beverage Operations
The objective of this J-1 training program is to provide the participant with structured, hands-on exposure to U.S. hospitality standards, service culture, and food and beverage operations while fostering professional development and cross-cultural exchange.
The participant will complete a two-month rotational training program within the Food & Beverage department, followed by a guided leadership development phase focused on observational supervision, team coordination, and service flow management under direct managerial oversight.
Phase 1: Food & Beverage Operations Training (Months 1-2)
During the initial rotation, the participant will receive training in core front-of-house service functions, including:
  • Understanding U.S. guest service standards and restaurant operations
  • Assisting with breakfast and lunch buffet setup, maintenance, and presentation
  • Supporting service staff by clearing and resetting tables in accordance with sanitation and safety standards
  • Assisting guests with non-alcoholic beverage refills and basic service requests
  • Observing and assisting with food running and bread service to understand service timing and coordination
  • Learning in-room dining procedures by accompanying staff on order delivery and service execution

Training will focus on service efficiency, communication, teamwork, and guest interaction rather than independent responsibility.
Phase 2: Leadership & Supervisory Development (Months 3+)
In the second phase, the participant will transition into a structured supervisory training role, which includes:
  • Observing and learning basic shift coordination under direct supervision
  • Understanding staffing flow, service pacing, and guest satisfaction monitoring
  • Participating in team briefings and post-shift evaluations
  • Developing communication and leadership skills within a U.S. hospitality environment
  • Completing a supervisor skills assessment as part of the learning process

The participant will not hold final authority over scheduling, hiring, discipline, or independent supervision.
Educational & Training Background Requirements
  • Enrollment in or recent completion of a foreign hospitality, tourism, or related academic program OR relevant professional experience consistent with J-1 eligibility
  • Prior experience or academic exposure to food and beverage operations preferred
Skills & Competencies Developed
  • Professional English communication with guests, colleagues, and management
  • Understanding of U.S. restaurant service models and guest expectations
  • Basic operational math skills (checks, counts, timing)
  • Food safety and sanitation awareness
  • Cross-cultural communication and workplace adaptation
