Job description

Ayrton Energy’s mission is to propel the global shift towards sustainable energy with the broad deployment of our cutting-edge hydrogen storage technology, reshaping hydrogen distribution to mirror the safety, simplicity, and efficiency of traditional fuels such as diesel or gasoline.  As part of a fast-growing startup, Ayrton is looking for a dynamic Mechatronics Engineering Intern to join our team and help develop our technology into a commercial product.  In this role you can anticipate a large variety of tasks — from designing new parts to programming new components and hands-on manufacturing and assembly — along with rapid learning about the hydrogen economy.  You will work side-by-side with engineers and scientists to tackle challenges in reactor design, measurement systems, and laboratory automation.

You will love this job if:

  • You are excited to work at an early-stage startup on the frontier of energy systems technology, where the answers aren’t always clear, and you get to help find new solutions to challenges being faced for the first time
  • You enjoy working in cross-functional teams and feel comfortable sharing your ideas
  • You thrive in fast-paced, hands-on environments and are comfortable moving between engineering offices, the shop, and the lab
  • You want to work in a collaborative and supportive team environment where everyone’s role is mission-critical
  • You have a passion for clean technology and a desire to develop products for a sustainable future

Your Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will work with the chemistry, mechanical, and electrical teams to help design, build, and integrate systems that support Ayrton’s LOHC technology platforms
  • Assist with aspects of reactor and test equipment design, including mechanical design, engineering simulation, prototyping, manufacturing, and commissioning
  • Support the development of microcontroller-based measurement and automation tools, paired with data acquisition and processing software, for prototype laboratory equipment
  • Specify, source, and evaluate electrical and instrumentation components
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineers and research professionals to enhance laboratory functionality and rapidly improve prototype systems
  • Generate design documentation — such as schematics, wiring diagrams, and controls notes — to support design review and manufacture
  • Support hazard reviews, risk assessments, and safe operating procedures

What Success Looks Like After Your Internship:

  • You have contributed hands-on to building, commissioning, and validating Ayrton Energy’s prototype and test systems
  • You have developed well-integrated measurement, controls, and automation tools that the team continues to rely on
  • You have grown into a capable technical contributor for instrumentation, controls, and automation challenges
  • You have deepened your understanding of the hydrogen economy and clean energy systems development
  • You have become a valued contributor to Ayrton’s engineering culture and product development process

Your Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing, or recently completed, a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Control, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Available for a 12- or 16-month co-op / internship term
  • Hands-on experience — through coursework, design teams, personal projects, or previous work terms — building and testing mechatronic systems
  • Experience working with Solidworks CAD software to produce design and manufacturing drawings
  • Experience with microcontroller platforms (e.g., Arduino, M5Stack) and programming for measurement, automation, or data acquisition
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada and able to work on-site at Ayrton Energy’s facility in Calgary

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Beckhoff PLCs, TwinCAT, EtherCAT networks, and embedded controller platforms such as M5Stack is considered an asset
  • Experience working with fuel cell, electrolyzer or related electrochemical systems an asset
  • Familiarity with hydrogen and hazardous area classification standards an asset

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every requirement — your unique experience and perspective matter

Internship Details:

  • Internship length is 12 or 16 months
  • This is a paid, on-site internship based at our Calgary facility
  • You’ll receive mentorship from experienced engineers and scientists, and hands-on ownership of meaningful projects
