Intern Embedded C Programming information

What is the difference between Intern Embedded C Programming vs Intern Firmware Development?

AspectIntern Embedded C ProgrammingIntern Firmware Development
Required SkillsEmbedded C, microcontroller basics, debuggingEmbedded C, hardware interaction, firmware design
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems labs, electronics workshopsEmbedded systems labs, hardware testing environments
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, IoT devicesConsumer electronics, industrial equipment, IoT

Intern Embedded C Programming and Intern Firmware Development roles share skills like embedded C and work in embedded systems environments. However, firmware development often involves deeper hardware interaction and firmware design, making it more hardware-centric. Both roles are common in industries like consumer electronics and IoT, but firmware development may require additional hardware knowledge.

Is there demand for C programmers?

Embedded C programming is in high demand due to its critical role in developing firmware and embedded systems across industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation. Companies seek skilled C programmers with experience in microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools, making it a valuable skill set for employment opportunities.

Will AI replace embedded?

AI is unlikely to fully replace embedded C programming roles, as embedded systems require specialized knowledge of hardware and real-time constraints. Instead, AI tools can assist embedded engineers by automating testing, debugging, and code optimization, enhancing productivity. Proficiency in embedded C, hardware interfaces, and debugging tools remains essential for these positions.

Job description

Spang Power Electronics, a division of Spang & Company, has an excellent career opportunity for an Embedded Controls Engineer based in Mentor, OH. This position will be responsible for designing, implementing, and validating embedded control software for industrial digital power electronics systems. This role focuses on practical real-time control, signal acquisition, digital filtering, and firmware development tightly coupled to high-power hardware. The position requires close collaboration with hardware engineers and hands-on work with real systems in the lab.

Spang Power Electronics is a premier provider of high-quality power solutions and proprietary technology for the world’s most critical industries. We design and manufacture systems and products for industrial control applications all over the world, specializing in SCR Power Controllers, custom Transformers, and AC/DC Power Systems. Spang Power Electronics is headquartered in Mentor, OH, with sites in Sandy Lake, PA, and Xiamen, China.

In this role, you will develop and maintain embedded firmware for the digital control of industrial power electronics, including systems using SCRs and IGBTs to generate regulated DC and AC output power. You will architect and implement firmware for real-time control on MCUs, DSPs, or FPGAs using C/C++ or similar low-level languages, and apply control algorithms for voltage, current, power, and thermal regulation in digitally controlled power converters. Responsibilities also include implementing firmware-level protection, monitoring, and diagnostic features to support industrial power reliability requirements. In addition, you will participate in technical reviews and contribute to documentation, coding standards, and version control practices, while supporting product validation, manufacturing transitions, and field troubleshooting as needed. The ideal candidate will be comfortable debugging complex embedded systems in lab environments, collaborating cross-functionally with hardware, systems, and product teams to define software requirements and interface specifications. The position requires occasional travel up to 10%.

Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Controls Engineering or a related field, with 3+ years of experience in embedded controls, embedded software, or real-time systems. Strong skills in C/C++, RTOS environments, and digital control of industrial power converters are required, along with experience using microcontrollers or DSPs and working directly with hardware such as ADCs, PWMs, timers, and interrupts. Candidates should also understand power electronics and control theory and be comfortable using standard lab tools. Experience with embedded web servers and web interface development is a plus.
