What types of projects and tasks can an intern draftsman expect to work on during their internship?

As an Intern Draftsman, you can expect to assist with creating and updating technical drawings and blueprints under the supervision of senior draftsmen or engineers. Common tasks include converting sketches and specifications into CAD drawings, revising plans based on feedback, organizing drawing files, and occasionally participating in site visits or team meetings. This hands-on experience helps you build your technical skills while learning industry standards and collaborating closely with architects, engineers, and other design professionals. The role offers valuable exposure to real-world projects and workflows, which can be instrumental in developing your drafting career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern draftsman, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Draftsman, you need a solid understanding of drafting principles, basic design concepts, and proficiency in mathematics, often supported by coursework or a diploma in drafting or engineering technology. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks is typically required, and knowledge of industry standards is a plus. Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with engineers and senior draftsmen. These skills ensure accurate drawings, efficient teamwork, and support the overall design and engineering process.

What is an intern draftsman?

Intern Draftsmen are entry-level professionals or students who assist in creating technical drawings and plans used in construction, manufacturing, or engineering projects. They typically work under the supervision of experienced draftsmen, architects, or engineers, using computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate blueprints and schematics. This role is often a learning position, providing practical experience and training in drafting standards, industry practices, and technical skills.

U.S Bridge

Job description

U.S. Bridge is a bridge fabricator and general contractor with a primary focus on the public sector.  It is a company founded on family values and is committed to building quality products that exceed the expectations of the owner and the public, in the safest manner possible for the employees, while doing so in a family-friendly work environment.

We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented intern to join our Engineering and Drafting team for a hands-on internship in steel bridge fabrication. You'll rotate through engineering and drafting, building a real understanding of how a bridge moves from drawings to finished steel, while contributing to live projects alongside experienced engineers, drafters, and shop personnel.

This is a mentored, hands-on internship: you'll start by observing and learning the fundamentals, then move into supporting real project work alongside engineers, drafters, and shop personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tour the fabrication shop and observe CNC machines, drills, saws, and shop workflow

  • Learn key industry terminology: floor beam, stringer, truss, connection, splice, cope and more

  • Meet with Engineering and Drafting to learn how plans become detailed shop drawings

  • Gain an overview of the full project lifecycle, from bid proposal through fabrication and shipping

  • Review shop drawings against contract documents to identify and list key components

  • Assist drafters with releasing shop drawings and related documentation

  • Support engineers with routine calculations and checks (bolt counts, paint area, pay weight summaries)

  • Sit in on project meetings, take notes, and help organize project documentation

  • Spend time in the shop connecting drawings to physical steel and learning basic weld symbols

  • Track one or two active projects as a supporting team member through detailing and fabrication

  • Maintain an ongoing “New Hire Notes” journal documenting resources and processes learned

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field

  • Strong attention to detail, in engineering, accuracy is safety

  • Proactive and curious; comfortable asking questions and seeking to understand the “why” behind tasks

  • Genuine interest in structural steel fabrication and the bridge industry

  • Willingness to spend time on the shop floor as well as at a desk

  • Strong communication skills and comfort working across departments

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • General office environment

  • Collaborative teamwork

If you think you have what it takes to become part of our team, contact us today.

Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and successful background checks are conditions of employment.

U.S. Bridge is an Equal Opportunity employer and fully supports and maintains compliance with all state, federal and local regulations.
