Job Summary
The Rail Systems Engineer II performs professional engineering work in the design, development, and integration of railroad signal and communications systems. This role applies engineering principles and industry standards to support system development, equipment integration, and testing activities.
The Rail Systems Engineer II works with moderate supervision and contributes to technical solutions supporting signal houses, wayside systems, grade crossings, and communications infrastructure.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering tasks related to the design and integration of railroad signaling and communications systems.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, and system documentation.
  • Support design of signal houses, relay logic, and microprocessor-based signal systems.
  • Participate in system integration activities for signal control systems and field equipment.
  • Analyze system performance and assist in troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure proper equipment assembly and configuration.
  • Assist in developing installation guidelines and technical procedures.
  • Review vendor documentation and equipment specifications.
  • Support project engineers and project managers in delivering technical scope of work.
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports, design documentation, and engineering calculations.
  • Participate in site visits, inspections, and commissioning activities when required.
  • Maintain strong technical documentation and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of railroad signaling principles and system interfaces.
  • Other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Programs (Outlook, Excel, Word), as well as Adobe PDF Suite.
  • Ability to create and revise MicroStation and AutoCAD drawings as required.
  • Ability to review drawings for quality, accuracy, and compliance with client specifications.
  • Capable of creating material lists based on drawings.
  • Ability to create engineering distributions/submittals to clients.
  • Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Technical training with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation .
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuitry.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a design engineer with complex electrical systems and/or components.
  • Proficiency in digital technology including use of tablet and/or laptop computer.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associate or Bachelor degree in Engineering, Electronics, Programming, or related field.
  • 2 years experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.

Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • OSHA 10 Construction Certification is a plus.

Travel
  • This position may require travel. On occasion, travel to RailPros headquarters, field offices or client offices, work sites, and other project related locations may be required.
