Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or distributed systems engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and stock options or bonuses. These roles often require expertise in large-scale systems, cloud platforms, and high-demand technical skills.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or distributed systems engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and working at large tech companies or in high-demand industries. These roles often require expertise in cloud platforms, distributed architectures, and strong problem-solving abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern Distributed Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Distributed Systems Engineer, you typically need a strong background in computer science fundamentals, programming (often in languages like Java, C++, or Go), and an understanding of distributed computing concepts. Familiarity with technical tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and version control systems like Git is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for solving complex distributed problems, collaborating with teams, and adapting to rapidly evolving technology environments.

Do CS interns get paid?

Computer Science interns, including those in distributed systems engineering roles, are often paid internships, with compensation varying by company, location, and internship duration. Many organizations offer stipends or hourly wages to attract talented students and provide practical experience in the field.

What is the difference between Intern Distributed Systems Engineer vs Intern Software Engineer?

AspectIntern Distributed Systems EngineerIntern Software Engineer

Job description

Distributed Systems Engineer
Build the future of investment management with us
The infrastructure managing $300 trillion in assets was built in the 90s. Now, all of it is up for grabs. The winner of the AI era of investment management will be a $100B+ company. We intend to be that company.
To get there, we're assembling the most talent-dense startup in New York. We hire people who are 1) exceptional, 2) allergic to anything that's not exceptional, and 3) recruiters of other exceptional people. We also have no tolerance for brilliant jerks.
We run lean by design. We work with a select group of the largest financial institutions in the world, go incredibly deep with each, and sit in the flow of trillions of dollars. We hire fewer people, ask each to own the outcome, and pay on impact - not tenure or experience.
Moment is not for everyone. The standards are unreasonably high. The pace is intense. And there is no playbook.
In return: the best work of your career, building a generational company.
About Moment
Moment is the AI operating system for investment management, built for the world's largest wealth firms and fintechs. Moment works with firms managing more than $10 trillion in client assets and is backed by Index, a16z, and Lightspeed. Moment was founded by former quants from Citadel and Jane Street and is based in NYC.
The Role
As we enter a new era, we're hiring an Engineer to help build the systems that will power Moment's next chapter.
We're building software for the leading financial institutions of the world, and the technical bar is high. Our systems move enormous volumes of data, demand real-time precision, and have to be both fast and irrefutable. The infrastructure we build is the foundation everything else stands on, and the decisions made today will define what's possible for years to come.
As an Engineer at Moment, you will architect and ship systems that solve genuinely hard problems - distributed systems at scale, event-driven pipelines, and data platforms that have to perform under the weight of the financial world. Moment will be a generational company, and you will help build the technical foundation that makes that possible.
You'll work closely with engineering leadership and across the team to deliver software that is as ambitious and distinctive as the company itself. This is a highly autonomous, collaborative role for a builder. You are equally comfortable designing systems and shipping code. You will navigate different levels of abstraction, from low-level performance work to architectural strategy. You can clearly articulate, lead, and execute technical projects spanning backend systems, data infrastructure, and product.
You're a good fit if you have
  • A strong understanding of design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and general systems fundamentals.
  • Experience architecting or contributing to systems that solve complex challenges around scalability, distributed systems, and large data volumes.
  • A willingness to figure stuff out
Even better if you have
  • Golang, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Kafka, ClickHouse, and cloud functions (e.g., AWS Lambda).
  • Event-driven systems, trading systems, portfolio management or accounting systems.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $200K to $325K
  • Equity: aggressive initial grant + annual performance-based bonuses
  • Our beautiful West Village Office with a terrace / 5x a week in office
  • Free lunch and dinner.
  • $150 monthly gym stipend.
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage. 100% company reimbursement
