What does an intern design engineer do?

An Intern Design Engineer supports engineering teams by assisting with the design, development, and testing of products or systems. Their responsibilities typically include creating CAD models, drafting technical drawings, conducting research, and helping with prototype assembly. Interns also collaborate with other engineers to solve design challenges and may be involved in documentation or report writing. This role provides hands-on experience and helps interns build practical skills in engineering design processes.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an intern design engineer expect during their internship?

As an Intern Design Engineer, you will typically assist with drafting technical drawings, supporting product design, and participating in team brainstorming sessions. You may also work on prototyping, testing components, and documenting design changes under the supervision of senior engineers. This hands-on experience helps interns develop practical skills, understand engineering workflows, and learn how to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing and quality assurance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Design Engineer, a strong grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant engineering degree are typically required. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), simulation tools, and basic knowledge of industry standards is often expected. Effective communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to design projects, adapt to fast-paced environments, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Intern Design Engineer vs Junior Mechanical Engineer?

AspectIntern Design EngineerJunior Mechanical Engineer
QualificationsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering programBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focused, supervisedEntry-level professional, responsible for design tasks under supervision
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in design projects, learning industry toolsDeveloping design solutions, preparing technical drawings

Intern Design Engineers are typically students or recent graduates gaining practical experience, while Junior Mechanical Engineers are entry-level professionals with a degree, responsible for more independent design work. Both roles are common in engineering firms, but the internship is more focused on learning, whereas the junior role involves applying skills in real projects.

Our work has been in the areas of laser communication, high-energy lasers, telescopes, biomechanical materials, hypersonics, and radars, for systems deployed on ground, maritime, air- and space-borne platforms. We have expertise in precision engineering, opto-mechanisms, electronics packaging, large structures, composite materials, and additive manufacturing. We are the Engineering Division's center for3Ddesign and data management, and are involved in every step of a program's execution from conceptual design to system integration and test. Position Description The group seeks a program intern to assist specialist and technical staff members with cutting-edge CAD modeling to aid research and program execution in the Mechanical/Aerospace engineering. This role will provide hands-on experience in 3D modeling, drafting, and design documentation while contributing to real-world mechanical design projects. The intern will gain exposure to the full design process, from concept generation through detailed CAD modeling and drawing release. Duties could include: * Create and update 3D CAD models and 2D drawings of mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks. * Assist in preparing detailed design documentation, including engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs),and revision updates. * Support engineers in developing prototypes by providing accurate CAD data for manufacturing procurement. * Conduct tolerance stack-up analyses, design for manufacturability (DFM) reviews, and drawing quality checks under supervision. * Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, analyst, procurement, manufacturing) to ensure designs meet requirements and standards. * Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into models and drawings. * Maintain CAD file organization, version control, and data management within the PLM system. In addition to specific technical tasks, an employment experience at Lincoln Laboratory offers: * The opportunity to generate real-world impact to national security and broader society through your work on challenging technology problems. * Exposure to a broad and deep range of technologies, expertise, and senior government stakeholders. * A strong culture of team success through individual growth. This includes technical and professional development courses, and mentorship opportunities to continue your career journey. * A diverse workplace with an emphasis on work-life balance, employee resource groups, and other exciting opportunities. A successful candidate: * Will be enrolled in a degree program of study in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics/Astronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Physics. * Have completed classes or strong familiarity with 3D CAD modeling utilizing SolidWorks. * Basic understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes. * Strong attention to detail and ability to create accurate, clear engineering drawings. * Good communication skills and willingness to work in a collaborative environment. * Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Preferred Skills (nice to have): * Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T). * Exposure to simulation tools (FEA, CFD) or rapid prototyping. * Knowledge of CAD data management systems (ARAS Innovator).
