Intern Core Logging Geologist information

What does an intern core logging geologist do?

An Intern Core Logging Geologist assists in examining, describing, and recording the physical characteristics of rock core samples extracted from drilling operations. Their primary responsibilities include visually inspecting core samples, documenting lithology, structures, mineral content, and other geological features. They work under the supervision of senior geologists to ensure accurate data collection, which is essential for resource evaluation and geological modeling. This position provides hands-on experience with geological fieldwork and core analysis techniques, making it valuable for those pursuing a career in geology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern core logging geologist?

To thrive as an Intern Core Logging Geologist, you need a foundational understanding of geology, mineralogy, and sedimentology, typically supported by or in progress towards a degree in geology or earth sciences. Familiarity with core logging software, GIS tools, and laboratory equipment is often required. Attention to detail, strong observational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for accurate data recording and teamwork. These competencies are crucial for producing reliable geological logs that inform exploration and resource evaluation decisions.

What types of projects and hands-on experiences can an intern core logging geologist expect during their internship?

As an Intern Core Logging Geologist, you can expect to work closely with experienced geologists to log and describe rock cores extracted from drilling sites. Your daily responsibilities may include identifying lithology, recording structural features, and assisting with sample collection and data entry. Many interns gain experience using geotechnical software and participate in field visits to drill sites, providing valuable exposure to real-world geological practices. Collaboration is common, as you’ll often work alongside geologists, drilling engineers, and laboratory technicians. This role offers a strong foundation for those interested in careers in mineral exploration, mining, or environmental geology.

Job description

Chevron is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies. We believe affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy is essential to achieve a more prosperous and sustainable world. Chevron produces crude oil and natural gas, manufactures transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals, and additives, and develops technologies that enhance our business and industry. To advance a lower-carbon future, we are focused on efficiently decreasing our carbon intensity, increasing renewables and offsets in support of our business, and investing in low-carbon technologies that enable commercial solutions. More information about Chevron is available at www.chevron.com.

For the 2026-2027 recruiting season, Chevron is accepting online applications for entry-level Earth Scientists.

Primary Location includes:

Earth Scientists within Chevron are part of multi-disciplinary teams which vary in make-up but can include geologists, geophysicists, engineers, data scientists, and/or software developers. Earth Scientists develop technical skills in geoscience, geophysics, and petrophysics assignments focused on exploration, development, reservoir characterization, and well operations.

Entry-level Earth Scientists are assigned to positions and projects that contribute value to Chevron based on degree, relevant academic preparation, previous work experience, and career objectives. They will be provided guidance by a supervisor and a technical mentor.

For recent graduates, Chevron has a competency-based employee development program that typically includes two to three technical assignments in the first 5 years of their career. This is supported by comprehensive technical training and mentoring combined with on-the-job experience. Mobility is encouraged as there are many opportunities for Chevron Earth Scientists to work in a variety of assignments at different locations.

As an Earth Scientist, you could begin your career in Chevron's domestic upstream operations, global exploration, or Chevron's research-focused Center of Excellence (COE) spending your first 5-10 years in a combination of exploration, appraisal, asset development, and/or technology assignments. You will be asked to solve challenging problems with the opportunity to utilize cutting-edge digital technologies and techniques. Opportunities to transfer to overseas locations may become possible after ten or more years of experience. Other opportunities for Earth Scientists include well-site operations, reservoir modeling, portfolio management, subsurface data science, technology deployment, technical team leadership, and various technical specialty focused positions such as stratigrapher, structural geologist, geophysicist, petrophysicist, basin analyst, and earth modeler.

  • Professional/academic focus in a technical area aligned with Chevron's business needs.
  • Strong academic performance in core programs, communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Position may require driving on a routine basis.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in an integrated oil or international service company intern program and/or prior experience with industry workflows for subsurface characterization.
  • Participation in an energy industry or sponsored university research project.
  • Practical experience with geoscience coding, data science, and/or machine learning.
