Job description

Overview

Please note that this position is contingent upon the successful award of a contract currently under bid.

Goldbelt Apex, a part of the Healthcare Technology Transformation Group, is a data-focused company dedicated to process and quality in every aspect. As healthcare IT experts, Apex is committed to building systems that enable healthcare organizations to communicate and exchange data seamlessly across different systems and devices.

Summary:

Goldbelt Apex is seeking a qualified Bioinformatician to provide data management and bioinformatics support services. This role involves managing epidemiological and laboratory data by utilizing various software packages in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, particularly within the Division of Viral Diseases and the Viral Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (VVPDB).

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

Support the design, development, and implementation of surveillance tools to collect epidemiologic data for Viral Vaccine-Preventable Disease Programs through the following tasks:

  • Maintain epidemiological and laboratory data by using SAS as well as other data management software packages (e.g., R, REDCap, Microsoft Access, Excel, EpiInfo)
  • Support the design, development, and implementation of surveillance tools to collect epidemiologic data
  • Convert existing datasets from a diverse array of file formats (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL, and ASCII files) into SAS datasets
  • Design, program, test, modify, enhance, maintain, and support new surveillance applications to collect epidemiological data
  • Develop scripts and software for data manipulation, cleaning, analysis, and visualization (using programming languages such as Python, R, BASH, and SQL)
  • Develop bioinformatics pipelines using parallel programming capabilities through workflow tools, including Snakemake or Nextflow, on Linux-based high-performance computing environments
  • Transform data sources into appropriate file formats for bioinformatics/epidemiological studies
  • Conduct data mining and data curation from public sequence databases to support bioinformatics and molecular epidemiological analyses
  • Work with and/or develop dashboarding tools, including Power BI, Tableau, and R Shiny, to manage and visualize laboratory and epidemiological data
  • Submit monthly progress report, detailing achievements and progress on sub-tasks a-i. Please also indicate any project obstacles that need to be overcome

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ensure that you are well-acquainted with every responsibility outlined in the essential job functions section above. It's important to have a thorough understanding of these tasks, as they form the backbone of your role.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Life Sciences, Public Health, or related field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Core experience with analysis of biological datasets encountered in studies of infectious disease (sequencing, protein, phenotype, or other relevant data types)
  • Experience with selection/evaluation of computational approaches to perform analyses of biomedical data.
  • Experience with interpretation, reporting, and documentation of computational analyses over biological datasets
  • US Citizen (birth or naturalization)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SAS, R, Python, SQL
  • Surveillance pipeline development
  • Dashboarding tools (Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny)
  • Public health or CDC program support experience

**NOTE: Must be able to potentially obtain security clearances as needed (i.e., Confidential, Secret, or Top Secret)

Pay and Benefits
