Job description
The Materials Informatics Team brings together experts in computational materials science, data science, and experimental research to accelerate materials development for advanced and niche applications. The team's work is grounded in fundamental research, leveraging state-of-the-art computational and data-driven approaches to improve the performance of key automotive components through materials innovation.
We are currently seeking a battery experimental intern to join our team in Silicon Valley, California. In this role, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to explore, model, and analyze materials systems that support next-generation vehicle technologies, including electrification.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the synthesis and processing of materials for all-solid-state batteries and/or conventional lithium-ion batteries.
- Perform materials characterization and property evaluation, including ionic and electronic conductivity measurements, structural analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), temperature-dependent behavior, and microstructural observations.
- Conduct battery performance characterization, such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical testing, and cycling performance evaluation.
- Apply descriptive data analytics to experimental and computational datasets to identify trends, correlations, and performance drivers.
- Analyze, summarize, and communicate research findings through technical presentations, written reports, and documentation suitable for internal dissemination and potential publication.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated advanced research experience, with a strong record of scientific publications and/or filed patents in relevant technical areas.
- Strong theoretical foundation in inorganic and organic chemistry, materials science, and reaction kinetics.
- Hands-on experience in the design, synthesis, and processing of novel materials for electrochemical systems.
- Proficiency with a broad range of materials characterization techniques, including structural, electrical, and electrochemical methods.
- Demonstrated expertise in electrochemical system performance evaluation, including battery testing and diagnostics.
- Strong analytical skills, with exceptional attention to detail, creativity in problem-solving, and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- High level of motivation and passion for empirical research, with the ability to address complex scientific questions through data-driven approaches.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical concepts and research findings.
- Must be currently enrolled in a four-year accredited college or university program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent).
- Availability to work full-time during the internship.
- Ability to work onsite in Silicon Valley, CA, for a period of three months or longer.
Preferred Skills
- Strong foundational knowledge of electrochemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry, with practical application in materials or electrochemical systems.
- Familiarity with battery-related materials and processes, including electrolytes, electrodes, and interfacial phenomena, is a plus.
- Ability to connect fundamental scientific principles with real-world automotive and energy-storage challenges.
