How much do intern commercial pilots jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for intern commercial pilots in the United States is $17.04, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical training and mentorship opportunities available for Intern Commercial Pilots within an airline or flight training organization?

Intern Commercial Pilots typically participate in structured training programs that combine classroom instruction, simulator sessions, and supervised flight time. Many organizations pair interns with experienced pilots or instructors who provide mentorship, helping interns navigate both technical and professional challenges. Interns often rotate through different roles or departments to gain a comprehensive understanding of airline operations. This exposure is invaluable for building foundational skills and making professional connections that can support future career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern Commercial Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Commercial Pilot, you need a solid understanding of aeronautical principles, flight operations, and must be enrolled in or have completed a commercial pilot training program with appropriate medical certification. Familiarity with flight simulators, aviation navigation systems, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Strong situational awareness, decision-making, and teamwork skills help you adapt to dynamic environments and communicate effectively with crew and ground staff. These competencies are critical for ensuring flight safety, regulatory compliance, and effective collaboration during training and real-world flying.

What are Intern Commercial Pilots?

Intern Commercial Pilots are individuals who are undergoing practical training or gaining work experience in a commercial aviation environment as part of their journey to becoming fully licensed commercial pilots. These internships often provide aspiring pilots with exposure to airline operations, flight procedures, and hands-on experience under the supervision of experienced pilots. The role may involve assisting with pre-flight checks, observing flights, and performing administrative or safety-related tasks. It's a valuable opportunity for building hours, learning industry standards, and networking within the aviation sector.

Do pilots make $300 an hour?

Commercial pilots, including those working as interns or entry-level, typically do not earn $300 an hour. Pilot wages vary based on experience, employer, and flight hours, but most entry-level commercial pilots earn significantly less, with higher pay rates generally reserved for experienced or specialized pilots such as airline captains.

What pilots make $500,000 a year?

Experienced commercial pilots, especially airline captains flying long-haul international routes or working for major carriers, can earn $500,000 or more annually. High earnings typically require extensive flight hours, seniority, and advanced certifications such as an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) license.

How do I become a commercial pilot with no experience?

To become a commercial pilot, you must obtain a private pilot license first, which requires flight training, passing written and practical exams, and meeting minimum flight hour requirements. Afterward, you need to accumulate additional flight hours, obtain an instrument and commercial pilot certificate, and meet age and medical standards. Gaining experience through flight schools, flight clubs, or working as a flight instructor can help build the necessary hours for commercial pilot certification.

What is the difference between Intern Commercial Pilots vs Flight Instructor?

AspectIntern Commercial PilotsFlight Instructor
Required CertificationsCommercial Pilot Certificate, student or private pilot licenseCertified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate, commercial pilot license
Work EnvironmentTraining flights, supervised flying hours, flight schoolsTeaching students, flight training sessions, flight schools
Industry UsageGaining flight hours, training for commercial flying jobsTraining new pilots, providing flight instruction

Intern Commercial Pilots are primarily focused on gaining flight experience and hours under supervision, often within flight schools. Flight Instructors, on the other hand, are certified to teach students and help them obtain their pilot licenses. Both roles involve training in similar environments but serve different purposes in pilot development.

Can you intern as a pilot?

Internships for commercial pilots are uncommon because pilot training requires extensive certification and experience. Most aspiring pilots complete flight training, obtain necessary licenses such as a private or commercial pilot certificate, and accumulate flight hours before seeking employment or internships. Some flight schools or airlines may offer trainee programs or apprenticeships to gain practical experience.
