Description
Position Overview: The Planning Intern for the Village of Los Lunas plays a vital role in supporting the Planning Division with various day-to-day planning activities. This position involves assisting in tasks such as application intake and review, coordination of public hearing documents and notices, delivering exceptional customer service, and contributing to GIS mapping efforts. The Planning Intern's role is pivotal in ensuring the effective and smooth operation of the Planning Division, while also offering valuable learning experiences in the field of urban planning.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Planning Division team in preliminary reviews of planning and zoning applications.
  • Assist in the preparation and organization of public hearing documents, notices, and related materials for different planning initiatives.
  • Assist the Planning Division in providing courteous and informed customer service to the public, stakeholders, and applicants, offering guidance on planning procedures and inquiries.
  • Complete Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping tasks, data management, and graphic design to create and maintain spatial data, maps, and visual aids.
  • Contribute to the coordination of inter-departmental reviews for various applications, ensuring efficient communication and timely processing.
  • Support the implementation of planning projects, workshops, meetings, and hearings as needed.
  • Support the Code Enforcement Division and/or Planning Division with project-based tasks and general questions.
  • Assist with the maintenance of organized records and documentation related to planning activities.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities and learn from experienced planners within the division.
  • Take part in training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to enhance skills and understanding of planning practices.

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's program in Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, or a related field that offers foundational knowledge of planning practices.
  • Strong interest in urban planning, land use, and community development.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a courteous and professional demeanor.
  • Basic proficiency in using office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Interest in and willingness to learn Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively within a team and adapt to a dynamic work environment.
  • Eagerness to contribute to planning initiatives and gain practical experience in the field.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while adhering to deadlines.
