Job description

The City of Wichita is NOT an E-Verify Employer. Distinguishing Features of Work The Information Technology Intern will support various divisions within the City of Wichita IT Department through a rotational internship. The intern will gain hands-on experience by working across multiple functional teams including Service Desk, Application Development, Application Support, Business Relationship Management, GIS, Data Science, Operations, Network, SCADA and IT Security.

Work is reviewed by a full-time staff member, and professional project work is directed and reviewed by staff members in professional exempt roles. This is an educational internship requiring active enrollment in a higher education program throughout the duration of employment. This is a part-time position that consist of 25 hours a week.

The exact shift and hours will be determined at hire. The internship will be on a yearly basis for up to 2 years. This position will require background check and fingerprinting.

Must be able to provide a current enrollment schedule each semester Strong communication skills both orally and in writing.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and/or the public Logical and analytical thinking abilities Adaptability to different technical environments Ability to work independently and in a team Attention to detail and good organizational habits Willingness to learn new systems and processes Professionalism and respect for confidentiality Ability to follow established procedures and instructions Valid Kansas Driver's License May require the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather May require ability to cover uneven terrain, go up and down stairs, and otherwise maneuver around construction sites Ability to safely perform the physical requirements for the specific internship assignment An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace Experience and Training Required Experience and Training Must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Data Science, or Engineering. Must have Junior or Senior standing at the time of the internship.

6 months of experience using Microsoft Office tools as part of prior work experience, classroom projects, or documented academic assignments. Must have a valid Kansas Driver's License Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training Completion of at least one introductory college-level IT course. 6 months of hands-on experience with IT systems through documented projects, internships, or work. Completion of at least one course, lab, or a minimum of 6 months of work experience (internship, part-time, or volunteer) in any of the following areas: Help Desk operations or technical support (Eg.

ServiceNow) Programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, C#) GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) Data management and visualization, including tools such as SQL, Power BI, or Tableau Networking basics (e.g., TCP/IP, Cisco, firewalls) SCADA or industrial control systems Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement. Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a fingerprint, pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of a criminal record check.
