What is an intermediate QA analyst?

Intermediate QA Analysts are quality assurance professionals with a moderate level of experience, typically ranging from 2 to 5 years. They are responsible for designing, implementing, and executing test plans and cases to ensure software meets quality standards. Intermediate QA Analysts work closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to identify bugs, verify fixes, and contribute to process improvements. Their role often involves both manual and automated testing, and they are expected to have a solid understanding of QA methodologies and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate QA analyst?

To thrive as an Intermediate QA Analyst, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, test case design, and defect tracking, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems like Jira, and knowledge of SQL are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help QA Analysts identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These skills and attributes are crucial to ensure software quality, reduce defects, and deliver reliable products to end users.

What are some typical challenges faced by an intermediate QA analyst when working on cross-functional teams?

As an Intermediate QA Analyst, one common challenge is ensuring clear communication and alignment between developers, product managers, and other stakeholders. You may need to advocate for quality standards while managing tight deadlines and shifting requirements. Balancing thorough test coverage with project timelines and adapting to evolving technologies are also frequent hurdles. Collaborating effectively and proactively addressing issues helps maintain both software quality and team efficiency.

What is the difference between Intermediate Qa Analyst vs QA Tester?

AspectIntermediate QA AnalystQA Tester
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field; certifications like ISTQB are commonOften requires a high school diploma or associate degree; certifications like ISTQB are also common but less emphasized
Work EnvironmentInvolves analyzing requirements, designing test plans, and coordinating testing efforts within development teamsPrimarily executes test cases, reports bugs, and documents test results, often under supervision
Industry UsageUsed across software development, IT, and tech companies for quality assurance rolesCommonly found in software companies, testing service providers, and tech industries

The Intermediate QA Analyst typically has more responsibilities in test planning, analysis, and coordination, requiring a higher level of technical knowledge and experience. QA Testers focus more on executing tests and identifying bugs. Both roles are essential in quality assurance but differ in scope and complexity.

How much is the salary of an Intermediate QA Analyst?

The salary of an Intermediate QA Analyst typically ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on location, experience, and industry. Professionals with strong testing skills and familiarity with tools like Selenium or JIRA may earn towards the higher end of this range.

Is a quality assurance analyst an entry-level job?

A quality assurance analyst can be an entry-level position, especially for those with basic knowledge of testing tools and software development processes. However, more advanced QA analyst roles often require prior experience, technical skills, or certifications such as ISTQB. Entry-level positions typically focus on manual testing and learning company-specific testing procedures.

What are top 3 skills for an Intermediate QA analyst?

An Intermediate QA analyst should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify issues effectively, proficiency in testing tools and automation frameworks such as Selenium or JUnit, and good understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and testing methodologies. These skills enable efficient test planning, execution, and defect reporting in a collaborative environment.

Job description

Job Description Job Title: QA Analyst Location: Bolton (3x per week on-site) Job Type: Full-time salaried We are seeking a Junior/Intermediate QA Analyst on behalf of our client. In this role you will help ensure the quality and reliability of our client's flagship platform, through hands-on functional testing and a growing contribution to test automation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their QA career who wants to broaden their skills across manual testing, Playwright-based automation, and light database work in a collaborative, hybrid environment.

Responsibilities: Plan and execute manual functional, regression, and exploratory testing on the Modern platform across new features and bug fixes. Write clear, well-organized test cases and document defects with detailed, reproducible steps. Contribute to our automated test suite by creating and maintaining end-to-end tests using Playwright, with support and code review from the team.

Verify data and results directly in the database using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) when testing requires it. Perform small, straightforward database updates and queries to set up test conditions or validate expected outcomes. Collaborate with developers and product managers to clarify requirements, reproduce issues, and confirm fixes.

Participate in release verification and help maintain quality standards across each deployment. Track and report on testing progress, defects, and overall product quality. Qualifications: 1-3 years of experience in a software QA or testing role (co-op, internship, or related hands-on experience considered).

Solid understanding of QA fundamentals: test case design, regression testing, and the defect lifecycle. Working knowledge of SQL and comfort using SSMS for basic queries and simple data updates. Strong attention to detail and the ability to write clear, reproducible bug reports.

Good written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative, team-first attitude. Able to work on a hybrid schedule based out of our Bolton, Ontario office. Exposure to test automation, ideally with Playwright (or a similar framework such as Cypress or Selenium).

Familiarity with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and how modern web applications are structured. Experience with version control (Git) and working in an agile/Scrum environment. Familiarity with bug-tracking and test-management tools.

A genuine interest in growing toward a more automation-focused QA role over time.
