Intermediate Piping Designer information

What is an intermediate piping designer?

Intermediate Piping Designers are professionals who create detailed plans and layouts for the piping systems used in industrial facilities such as oil refineries, chemical plants, and power stations. They work with engineers to design efficient and safe piping routes, select materials, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Their experience typically ranges from 3 to 7 years, allowing them to handle complex design tasks while still collaborating under the guidance of senior designers or engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate piping designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Piping Designer, you need a solid understanding of piping design principles, drafting standards, and relevant engineering codes, usually backed by a diploma or degree in engineering technology or a related field. Proficiency in technical tools such as AutoCAD, SmartPlant 3D, and other piping design software is essential, along with knowledge of industry-specific document management systems. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate well with engineering teams and ensure accuracy in designs. These skills ensure that piping systems are designed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards, which is critical for successful project delivery.

How much does an Intermediate Piping Designer earn?

An Intermediate Piping Designer typically earns between $60,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often work with CAD software and may require relevant certifications or technical skills to advance their salary potential.

What are some typical challenges an intermediate piping designer might face when working on multidisciplinary engineering projects?

Intermediate Piping Designers often encounter challenges related to coordinating with multiple disciplines, such as structural, mechanical, and electrical teams, to ensure that piping layouts do not conflict with other systems. Managing revisions and updates to designs based on evolving project requirements or site conditions is another common challenge. Effective communication and familiarity with industry-standard software (like AutoCAD or SmartPlant) are crucial for overcoming these obstacles and delivering accurate, clash-free designs.

What is the difference between Intermediate Piping Designer vs Piping Designer?

AspectIntermediate Piping DesignerPiping Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or associate degree in piping design or related fieldSimilar educational background, often with less experience required
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, industrial plantsSame as Intermediate Piping Designer, often working together
ResponsibilitiesDevelops piping layouts, creates detailed drawings, collaborates with engineersPerforms similar tasks, often under supervision or as part of a team
Experience LevelMid-level, with some project experienceEntry to mid-level, with less project responsibility

In summary, an Intermediate Piping Designer and a Piping Designer share similar educational backgrounds and work environments. The main difference lies in experience and responsibility, with the Intermediate Piping Designer typically having more project involvement and technical expertise.

About the Role

A Senior Designer I has advanced knowledge of all aspects of piping design, including a strong understanding of industry standards (ASME, ANSI, API), materials and their impact on design, and advanced proficiency in AutoCAD® and CADWorx Plant®. Senior Designer I candidates independently lead mid-sized projects or multiple small projects, mentor junior designers, and operate with minimal day-to-day direction. Works directly with engineers and receives broad, high-level direction from a supervisor.

What You Will Do

  • Advanced P&ID and piping annotation skills; able to pick up redlines following Kahuna standards, spot errors, back-check other’s work, and develop P&IDs from walkdowns with little to no instruction from supervisor, engineer, or lead.
  • Ability to do complex 3D modeling using CADWorx Plant® (or AutoCAD Plant 3D®) with limited direction from experienced designers.
  • Compressor station level piping ability; ability to route and detail piping with a focus on clean pipe routing and design, introduction to pipe rack loading.
  • Elementary site plan layout skills for larger facilities.
  • Independently lead piping of mid-sized projects or multiple small projects while coordinating with designers and engineers.
  • Assist in development of group standards and practices; proactively lead evolution of team designs and pre-developed tools/templates.
  • Independently assist with and review drawings of other less experienced designers and markup as necessary to represent a functional design, coordinating with supervisor, other experienced designers, and engineers. Able to mentor and train less experienced drafters/designers.
  • Leads coordination with other design teams to ensure continuous flow of information concerning other engineering disciplines affecting the design execution of a project.
  • Demonstrate full understanding of the workflow from beginning to end of a project. Provides technical and administrative support to the discipline design group, reviews their progress, and evaluates their work.
  • Consistently communicate technical and administrative project/task details including correspondence via emails and general documentation. Proactive in communicating project status and work load.
  • Consistently meeting deadlines, able to juggle multiple large projects with conflicting deadlines, identifying potential delays and proactively mitigating them. Commitment to putting in the time required to complete assigned tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate strong ability to functionally communicate technical and administrative project/task details, including correspondence via emails and general documentation.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and be learning to coach and mentor less experienced drafters/designers. Stay engaged and learn leadership skills.
  • Applies ASME B31.3, B31.1, and applicable B16 series codes throughout the design and modeling process.
  • Must be precise and organized in handling of drawings; proven track record of being detail oriented and able to prioritize and multitask as an individual and for the team.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

What You'll Bring

  • CADWorx Plant® proficiency required (or AutoCAD Plant 3D® at equivalent level); independently builds and manages complex 3D piping models with limited direction.
  • Typically 3–7 years of progressive relevant design experience or equivalent; 4 years minimum required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of available Navisworks® tools; able to operate Freedom, Manage, and Simulate and perform a presentation with a client.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD®; understands, can edit and use LISP routines, tools, plotting settings, and CUI; understands AutoCAD setup; uses tools to be more efficient; can troubleshoot computer issues and provide technical assistance to others.
  • A minimum of 2 years relative experience in oil and gas design or equivalent industrial environment.
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD®, CADWorx P&ID®, CADWorx Plant®, Bluebeam Revu®, Navisworks®, and other company software.
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures on an active facility.
  • Knowledge of gathering field dimensions, P&ID as-building, and walking down P&IDs to determine tie-in locations on an active facility is a plus.
