Intermediate Java Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate Java developer?

To thrive as an Intermediate Java Developer, you need solid proficiency in Java programming, object-oriented design, and familiarity with common frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate, typically backed by a relevant degree and 2–4 years of experience. Experience with version control systems like Git, build tools such as Maven or Gradle, and understanding of RESTful APIs are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you stand out in collaborative development environments. These skills and qualities ensure efficient code delivery, seamless integration with teams, and the ability to contribute to complex software projects.

What are some typical challenges faced by intermediate Java developers when transitioning from junior roles?

Intermediate Java Developers often encounter increased responsibility in system design, code quality, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Unlike junior roles focused mainly on coding tasks, intermediates are expected to understand architectural decisions, participate in code reviews, and contribute to problem-solving in complex projects. Balancing the need for writing efficient code with maintaining clarity and scalability can also be a challenge, as well as adapting to new frameworks or tools introduced by the team.

What is an intermediate Java developer?

Intermediate Java Developers are software professionals who have a moderate level of experience—generally 2 to 5 years—in developing applications using the Java programming language. They are proficient in core Java concepts, object-oriented programming, and frequently used frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate. Intermediate Java Developers can work independently on coding tasks, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to the design and implementation of software solutions, often working under the guidance of senior developers or architects.

Job description

The Role

We're looking for an Intermediate Java Backend Developer to join our Insurance practice in Toronto. This role is ideal for a software engineer who enjoys solving complex backend engineering challenges, modernizing enterprise applications, and building scalable Java-based services. You'll work alongside multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot production issues, refactor legacy applications, decouple tightly integrated systems, and develop robust APIs that support modern digital platforms.

We're looking for someone who embraces AI-enabled ways of working, using approved AI tools to accelerate development, testing, troubleshooting, and code quality while applying sound engineering judgement and responsible AI practices throughout the software development lifecycle.

Why This Role Is Open

We are currently hiring for this role due to an existing vacancy within our organization. This position is open as part of our ongoing business needs, and we are actively reviewing applications to fill this role with a qualified candidate who can make an immediate impact.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, maintain, and enhance scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot, delivering reliable enterprise-grade applications.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues, refactor legacy code, and help decouple monolithic applications into maintainable, modular services.
  • Design, develop, and optimize RESTful APIs while improving application performance, resiliency, and scalability using Docker-based development environments.
  • Develop automated unit and integration tests using JUnit, leveraging approved AI tools to accelerate development, testing, debugging, and code reviews while maintaining engineering quality and responsible AI practices.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, product owners, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions using Agile delivery practices.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional Java backend development experience with strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, REST API development, Git, JUnit, and SQL/NoSQL databases.
  • Proven experience troubleshooting production issues, refactoring enterprise applications, and designing loosely coupled, maintainable backend architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and containerized application development. Experience with Kubernetes is considered an asset.
  • Comfortable using approved AI development tools to improve productivity, accelerate testing, generate code suggestions, and support problem-solving while applying human judgement and responsible AI practices.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with experience working in Agile environments and delivering production-ready software.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience within insurance, financial services, or other regulated industries.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and application modernization initiatives.
  • Experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Passion for continuous learning, mentoring teammates, and driving engineering best practices.

Why Join Capco

  • Deliver high-impact technology solutions for leading insurance and financial services organizations.
  • Work in a collaborative, flat, and entrepreneurial consulting culture.
  • Access continuous learning, technical certifications, and career development opportunities.
  • Be part of a team shaping the future of digital transformation across Insurance and Financial Services.
