An Intermediate Developer is a software professional who has moved beyond the entry-level phase and possesses a solid understanding of programming concepts, languages, and development tools. They generally have 2-5 years of experience and are capable of working independently on moderately complex tasks while also collaborating within a team. Intermediate Developers are often expected to contribute to code reviews, help with system design, and mentor junior developers. They bridge the gap between junior and senior developers, playing a key role in the software development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Developer, you need solid programming skills, experience with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent practical experience. Proficiency with languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and frameworks like React or .NET, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication abilities help you collaborate and deliver quality solutions. These skills and qualities are vital for building reliable software, contributing to team goals, and advancing in a dynamic tech environment.

What opportunities for skill development and career progression are typically available to intermediate developers within a software development team?

Intermediate Developers often have access to a range of skill development opportunities, such as mentorship from senior engineers, participation in code reviews, and involvement in more complex projects. Many organizations encourage continuous learning through workshops, online courses, or attending industry conferences. As you gain experience, you may take on responsibilities like leading small features or mentoring junior developers, positioning yourself for advancement to a Senior Developer role. Collaboration with cross-functional teams also helps broaden your technical and communication skills, further supporting your career growth.

Job description

Who we are

You might know us as the inventors of the bath bomb, but there's more to this great-smelling, partly employee-owned, family-run company than pioneering cosmetics. We believe our business should put more back into the world than it takes and demonstrate that capitalism can be a force for good. We put our people first and fight cruel practices like animal testing, promote regeneration, and show that it is what's inside that counts - whether that's an ingredient in a product, or the minerals in a smartphone.

LUSH Digital offers a range of exciting online and in store experiences for our customers. Developers of many disciplines are responsible for creating and developing new innovations in technology, as well as providing and maintaining a global digital estate across multiple platforms and devices.

We love open source! The Cloud Native Computing Foundation is always our first port of call when a requirement for a new tool comes up. Whenever we can, the code we produce is made public for all to use.

Overview:

As an Intermediate DevOps Engineer, you will join our collaborative team to support, operate, and enhance our global digital infrastructure. You will work closely with our engineers to ensure our platforms are reliable, secure, and performant. A key strategic priority for LUSH Digital is our transition away from big-tech reliance; you will play a key role in this journey by implementing and managing the open-source tools that empower our engineering team. We are looking for a proactive engineer passionate about automation, reliability, and modern cloud-native practices to help support our digital team globally.
You can find out more about Lush Digital here - https://weare.lush.com/lush-life/our-company/we-are-digital/

Reporting to the Senior Backend Engineering Manager, the Intermediate DevOps Engineer undertakes the following RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the day-to-day maintenance of our global digital infrastructure, ensuring reliability and performance under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of our Terraform modules to support automated provisioning and consistent infrastructure states.
  • Manage and monitor containerized workloads using Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm; troubleshoot routine deployment or orchestration issues as they arise.
  • Assist in maintaining and optimizing GitLab CI/CD and ArgoCD pipelines, ensuring developers can deploy code efficiently and securely.
  • Monitor system health using our observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki), creating alerts and dashboards to track performance and catch potential issues early.
  • Operational Support: Participate in an on-call rotation to support our 24/7 global production environment, triaging and resolving incidents alongside the broader engineering team.
  • Partner with the software engineering team to support the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), assisting with branching strategies and deployment workflows.
  • Adhere to and apply security best practices across infrastructure configurations and deployment pipelines to keep our platform compliant and safe.

You bring the following QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in DevOps or a related technical role.
  • Proficient experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), specifically Terraform, and familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) components (Any cloud provider is advantageous).
  • Hands-on experience with containerisation/containerisation orchestration technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes and Helm.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, particularly Gitlab CI/CD and ArgoCD.
  • Working knowledge of application profiling and observability tools such as Loki, Prometheus, and Grafana
  • Experience with Cloudflare or another DNS provider
  • Experience supporting services in a high-availability production environment (Our reach is global, with 24/7 operation)

Preferred:

  • Programming or scripting abilities, with a focus on Bash and Golang (the wider dev teams use Python and TypeScript).
  • Knowledge of networking and web protocols is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with database technologies, such as MySQL and Postgres

Thriving with a diverse company culture, celebrating the uniqueness of our staff, and committed to inclusion. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

We thank all interested applicants; however, only qualified candidates will be contacted.

We're 10% Employee Owned - all colleagues play a role in protecting our ethics and our independence, contributing ideas for the future and sharing in the rewards of success when the company is doing well.#LI-IS1 #LI-Hybrid
