What does an interior stylist do?

An Interior Stylist focuses on enhancing the aesthetics of a space by selecting decor, furniture, colors, and accessories to achieve a specific look or mood. Unlike interior designers, they do not make structural changes but instead curate and arrange elements to create a visually appealing environment. They often work on residential spaces, commercial locations, photoshoots, and events to create polished, stylish settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interior stylist?

To thrive as an Interior Stylist, you need a keen eye for design, proficiency in color theory, spatial awareness, and typically a background in interior design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and CAD systems is often required, and industry certifications can be advantageous. Strong communication, client management, and time-management skills help set successful stylists apart. These skills ensure that Interior Stylists can creatively meet client visions, efficiently manage multiple projects, and deliver visually compelling, functional spaces.

What are some common challenges interior stylists face when working on client projects?

Interior Stylists often encounter challenges such as adhering to tight deadlines, working within varying budgets, and balancing clients’ personal styles with current design trends. They frequently need to source unique furnishings or decor items, manage last-minute changes, and coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and other design professionals. Problem-solving and adaptability are crucial, as unexpected issues with product availability, space limitations, or client preferences can arise. Despite these challenges, many Interior Stylists find the dynamic, creative nature of the job highly rewarding and enjoy seeing their vision come to life in client spaces.

How much does an interior stylist earn?

Interior stylists typically earn between $30,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the scope of projects. Many work freelance or on a project basis, which can affect income levels, and strong knowledge of design trends and client communication skills are important for success.

Job description

Company: Haus of PowellDepartment: Interior DesignLocation: San Antonio, TXEmployment Type: Full-TimePosition Type: In-Office + On-Site

About Haus of Powell

Haus of Powell is a full-service interior design studio creating elevated, thoughtfully curated residential interiors throughout San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country.

Our work extends beyond interior design to furnishings, window coverings, accessories and final styling. We believe the finishing details are what transform a beautifully designed space into a home that feels complete.

We are looking for an experienced Interior Styling & Install Coordinator with an exceptional design eye, strong organizational skills and a hands-on approach to help bring our projects to life.

Position Summary

The Interior Styling & Install Coordinator works alongside our design team to execute the final layers of our projects, with a strong focus on installations, accessory styling, showroom presentation, organization and photography preparation.

This is a hands-on creative position for someone who understands how to style a room and also appreciates the organization and preparation required behind the scenes to execute an exceptional installation.

The ideal candidate can walk into a space and recognize what it needs — while also being willing to unpack boxes, organize accessories, prepare for an installation, track outstanding items and make sure every last detail is complete.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the design team with client installations from preparation through final styling
  • Style accessories, artwork, bedding, pillows, textiles, greenery and décor
  • Create polished vignettes and thoughtfully layered spaces that reflect the Haus of Powell aesthetic
  • Prepare, organize and pull accessories and décor for upcoming installations
  • Unpack, inspect, organize and stage items for install days
  • Assist with sourcing accessories, artwork and finishing pieces for client projects
  • Maintain and organize the Haus of Powell accessory inventory, styling supplies and storage areas
  • Prepare homes for professional photography
  • Assist with styling for photo shoots and marketing content
  • Prepare installation documentation, styling plans and project materials
  • Assist with final installation cleanup and ensure every space is polished and client-ready
  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and consistently follow through to completion
Required Experience & Qualifications
  • Minimum 1–2 years of professional experience in interior styling, interior design, home staging, visual merchandising, furniture/home décor or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience styling residential spaces, showrooms, installations or professionally designed displays
  • Strong understanding of scale, proportion, color, texture, layering and composition
  • Experience styling artwork, accessories, textiles, bedding and décor
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a strong visual eye
  • Highly organized with excellent time-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under installation deadlines
  • Proactive, self-directed and comfortable taking ownership of assigned responsibilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional and comfortable interacting with clients, vendors and trade partners
  • Comfortable using basic digital tools, spreadsheets and project documentation
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to lift, unpack, move and position accessories, artwork and décor
  • Flexible availability during installation periods, including occasional early mornings, extended install days and travel when required

An interior design degree is not required; relevant professional styling experience is required.

Portfolio Required

Candidates should provide examples of spaces, installations, displays or styling work they have personally contributed to.

We want to see your eye for design, how you layer and finish a space, and your ability to create a polished and cohesive final result.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is:

Creative. Organized. Proactive. Resourceful. Detail-Oriented. Dependable. Hands-On.

You notice the details other people miss.

You understand when artwork isn't the right scale, when a vignette needs height, when a pillow combination isn't working or when a room needs another layer to make it feel complete.

You also understand that beautiful installations don't happen without preparation. You're willing to organize, unpack, move accessories, solve problems, track details and do what is needed to help the team deliver an exceptional finished space.

You don't wait to be told every next step. You take initiative, communicate and follow through.

What to Expect

This is not a desk-only interior design position.

Some days will be spent preparing for upcoming installations, sourcing accessories, organizing inventory or refreshing the showroom. Other days may involve being on-site installing and styling an entire home, preparing a project for professional photography or handling last-minute details.

You'll work closely with the Haus of Powell design team and contribute directly to the finished spaces our clients experience.

For the right person, this position offers the opportunity to grow within Haus of Powell as our design studio continues to expand.

Full-Time | In-Office + On-Site | San Antonio, Texas

How to Apply

Please submit your résumé and portfolio/examples of styling work along with a brief introduction telling us why you would be a great fit for Haus of Powell.
