Job description


The Campus Interior Designer plays a vital role in the planning, design, and coordination of functional and visually appealing interior spaces across the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). This role requires an experienced and creative professional with an understanding of interior design principles and practices, architecture, signage, wayfinding, and graphics. Responsible for the development, production, management, oversight, and coordination of interior design projects and efforts to include scopes, budgets, contracts, design, bidding, construction administration and compliance with codes and standards. Serves as an interior design liaison or point of contact for University campus customers, internal staff, architects, consultants, and/or vendors by representing FS in a positive and professional manner.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the preparation, creation, and maintenance of Campus Standards for Interiors
  • Leads the coordination and review of interior design projects and efforts to ensure adherence to furniture, interior finish, code compliance, and environmental graphic design standards are met
  • Manages interior projects from concept to completion ensuring design intent, budget, and quality standards are met
  • Reviews, coordinates, provides recommendations, and presents to campus customers external contracted consultant documents for building finishes and furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) on capital projects
  • Collaborates with Facilities Services (FS) units along with campus customers and serves as the UTK point of contact and liaison with external contracting firms for interior design services
  • Works closely with FS Space Management to test-fit solutions, quantify space needs, and optimize existing spaces
  • Partners with the UTK Office of Communications and Marketing to prepare, create, and maintain campus standards for signage, wayfinding, and graphics and assists campus customers with enhancing spaces in adherence with University branding guidelines
  • Coordinates, monitors, and provides input for interior project schedules, budgets, and costs.
  • Selects building finishes and FF&E for In-House Construction projects
  • Coordinates with internal and external units to receive and distribute estimates and bids of project costs such as furniture and construction costs.
  • Responsible for FF&E procurement and purchases from available contacts for user and campus customer approval in accordance with state and other applicable public bid laws.
  • Produces interior design drawings utilizing appropriate BIM, CAD, or related design software.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's Degree from a CIDA accredited interior design program
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in interior design
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Knowledge of interiors materials, manufacturers, vendors, codes, regulations, and procurement processes
    • Problem solving skills to identify end-user requirements, provide solutions, and deliver projects to meet parameters
    • Ability to produce design drawings utilizing appropriate software
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and/or efforts
    • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, organizational, and presentation skills with a customer-focused mindset
    • Proficiency in design software including BIM, CAD, PDF editing, and Adobe Creative Suite

Preferred Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Masters Degree
  • Experience:
    • NCIDQ Certified
    • 5 years experience in interior design.
    • 2 years experience in project management.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Industry gained knowledge and experience in interiors including extensive experience with furniture and finish material selection, standards, vendors, procurement, installations, and manufacturers.
    • Knowledge of project management best practices and experience.
