Job description

Field Engineer III

Location: Nationwide (Traveling Position)
Department: Engineering
Travel: Long-term project assignments throughout the United States
Compensation: $95,000 - $130,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit.

Be the Technical Leader That Brings Projects to Life.

Great projects don't succeed because the design was perfect-they succeed because experienced people know how to solve problems when construction begins.

As a Field Engineer III, you'll be the bridge between engineering, construction, and our clients. You'll spend your time where the work is happening, solving real-world technical challenges, building trusted relationships, and helping deliver complex industrial projects from the ground up. If you enjoy seeing your work make an immediate impact and want to be a key technical leader onsite, this is the role for you.

What You'll Do

As a Field Engineer III, you'll serve as a trusted technical resource by:

  • Providing technical support on active jobsites and responding to field or client technical issues.
  • Reviewing electrical designs and validating installations during construction.
  • Serving as the primary liaison between engineering, construction teams, clients, vendors, and partner engineering firms.
  • Building strong client relationships through regular communication during and between projects.
  • Leading small projects while coordinating across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Supporting project pursuits by collaborating with project managers and estimators on proposals.
  • Leading and mentoring team members through effective delegation and technical guidance.
  • Acting as an owner's representative to ensure project expectations are met.
  • Assisting with estimating specification reviews and preparing Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Supporting 3D/BIM model coordination and documenting as-built information as needed.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who enjoys being in the field, takes ownership of technical challenges, and thrives in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Five or more years of experience in construction, field engineering, or a related engineering role. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or the desire and qualifications to obtain licensure.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes, field coordination, and project execution.
  • Experience interpreting electrical drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other engineering or project management software.

Why This Role?

This position offers the opportunity to make a visible impact from day one. Rather than working behind the scenes, you'll be onsite helping guide construction, partnering directly with clients, and influencing the success of large-scale industrial projects from kickoff through completion.

You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, project managers, designers, construction professionals, and clients while expanding your technical expertise and leadership skills. Every project presents new challenges, new opportunities to learn, and the chance to see your work come to life in the field.

Travel: This position is part of our National Traveling Team. Unlike roles that require constant relocation, Field Engineers are typically assigned to one project for the duration of its lifecycle. Most assignments last 8 months to 2 years, allowing you to become an integral part of the project team, build strong relationships with clients and coworkers, and see the project through from startup to completion before moving on to your next assignment.

Why Interstates?

At Interstates, we believe our people are our greatest strength. We invest in our employees by providing opportunities to grow professionally, take on meaningful responsibility, and build lasting careers while working on some of the most innovative industrial and commercial projects in the country.

If you're looking for a role where you can combine technical expertise, leadership, client interaction, and hands-on problem solving, we'd love to hear from you.
