Job description

Senior Interior Designer, Health and Wellbeing

Founded in 1912, STV is a leading national infrastructure-focused professional services firm providing engineering, architectural, planning, environmental, program management, and construction management services. Ranked No. 32 on ENR's Top 500 Design Firms, STV brings 3,300+ professionals across 65+ offices to some of the most complex projects in the country. Learn more at stvinc.com.

STV's National Healthcare Practice is in an active growth phase - expanding its geographic reach, deepening its clinical expertise, and building a team capable of delivering complex health and wellbeing environments for academic medical centers, integrated health systems, public-sector clients, and ambulatory networks. We are looking for senior leaders who want to help shape that trajectory, not just fill a seat on a project.

Your Opportunity

As Senior Interior Designer, you will provide design leadership across health and wellbeing projects - from visioning and concept development through documentation, construction administration, and closeout. You will translate client goals, clinical operational needs, and evidence-based design principles into interior environments that support patient experience, staff performance, and long-term facility durability. This role operates at the intersection of design excellence and technical rigor, requires a senior client-facing presence, and contributes directly to STV's pursuit and business development efforts in the health and wellbeing market.

Your Key Responsibilities

Lead interior design efforts across health and wellbeing projects from pre-design and programming through construction administration and closeout - maintaining design intent, technical continuity, and quality standards throughout.

Drive concept development and design strategy - translating client mission, brand, patient and caregiver experience goals, clinical workflows, and evidence-based design principles into cohesive interior environments across a range of health and wellbeing project types.

Lead FF&E strategy, product research, material and furniture selection, finish schedules, and procurement coordination - with a thorough understanding of healthcare-appropriate performance standards, durability, cleanability, and infection prevention requirements.

Prepare and lead interior finish and FF&E specifications, ensuring technical accuracy, alignment with project requirements, healthcare industry standards, and STV QA/QC expectations.

Apply working knowledge of applicable codes, guidelines, and clinical environment requirements - including FGI Guidelines, ADA, life safety coordination, infection control design principles, and state DOH standards - as they apply to interior design scope.

Coordinate interior design decisions with architecture, medical planning, MEP/FP, technology, signage and wayfinding, sustainability, and specialty consultant teams - ensuring integrated delivery across all disciplines.

Facilitate stakeholder engagement with healthcare executives, clinical leadership, facilities teams, infection prevention representatives, and end users - translating complex operational and experiential input into clear interior design direction.

Ensure all interior design documentation meets STV QA/QC standards, project-specific client requirements, and healthcare operational expectations - and lead or participate in interdisciplinary reviews, mock-up evaluations, and milestone deliverable reviews.

Support business development through pursuit strategy, design narrative development, interview preparation, and client presentations - contributing to STV's positioning in the health and wellbeing market.

Mentor junior designers and emerging health and wellbeing interior design professionals - sharing technical and design knowledge, modeling client-ready professional judgment, and actively contributing to the long-term depth of the practice.

Contribute to practice growth by identifying follow-on opportunities with current clients, participating in lessons-learned processes, and helping advance the quality and consistency of STV's health and wellbeing interior design offering.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or Architecture from an accredited program.

Active NCIDQ certification - required.

12+ years of industry experience, with 10+ years of healthcare interior design experience within that total.

Demonstrated knowledge of applicable codes, guidelines, and standards as they apply to interior design scope - including FGI Guidelines, ADA, infection control design principles, and state DOH requirements.

Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and SketchUp.

Demonstrated experience with FF&E strategy, finish selection, specifications writing, and procurement coordination in healthcare environments.

Strong oral, written, and visual communication skills, with the ability to present effectively to clients, user groups, project teams, vendors, contractors, and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

AAHID certification, or active progress toward certification.

EDAC, LEED AP, or WELL AP accreditation.

Experience with Lean planning, user group facilitation, mock-up planning, post-occupancy evaluation, or design research related to healthcare outcomes and patient experience.

Experience with large academic medical centers, public-sector clients, or multi-site integrated health systems.

Experience supporting healthcare pursuits, shortlist interviews, technical approach narratives, and client relationship-building activities.

Professional Attributes

Client-focused and collaborative, with the ability to listen carefully, build consensus, and convert complex stakeholder input into clear interior design direction.

Design-minded and technically grounded - able to move fluidly between big-picture concept strategy and detailed technical execution across finish, FF&E, and specifications.

Commercially aware, with an understanding of how strong design, reliable delivery, and informed market perspective contribute to client trust, repeat work, and STV's competitive positioning in the health and wellbeing market.

Actively invested in the growth of junior designers and emerging health and wellbeing interior design professionals - sharing technical and design knowledge, modeling client-ready professional judgment, and helping build the long-term depth of the practice.

Curious about the future of health and wellbeing environments - committed to evidence-based design thinking, continuous improvement, and elevating the quality and consistency of STV's interior design offering.
