Description
TEMPORARY CARPENTER - TERM OF SIX MONTHS
Second Shift: 10am to 6pm Monday - Thursday and 7am to 3pm Fridays
Department of Facilities
Under the general direction of the Working Foreman of the Building Division and the Building Operations Manager or their designee, perform skilled, rough and finished carpentry work to construct, alter, repair and maintain various items constructed of wood and similar materials; renovation work; windows; glazing work; door and lock installation; general building interior and exterior carpentry repairs. Perform all other related duties for the building maintenance division within the Department of Facilities following established methods and procedures.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Conduct necessary measuring, squaring, sawing, fitting, sanding, painting, nailing and other activities to construct or build, assemble, repair, modify, renovate and maintain partitions, doors, windows, floors, furniture, building framework, roof repairs and other items.
Work from drawings, plans, ideas, concepts, instructions to design, build and construct bookcases, storage and other shelves, counters, partitions, cabinets, fences, furniture, other wooden articles and complete small masonry repairs.
Install doors and locks, windows, closures, screens, and associated hardware; install floors, desktops, sinks, counter and bathroom fixture tops, fences, shades, blinds and ceilings.
As required, repair damaged furniture, lockers and replacement or repair parts.
Install and replace damaged ceiling, wall, floor and carpeting tiles.
Make general repairs to roofs.
As scheduled or as necessitated by emergency situations, make building interior and exterior repairs.
Operate hand and power tools and woodworking equipment to cut and fashion parts and materials, fixtures and other wooden articles; operate sandblasting equipment.
Conduct regular, scheduled, emergency and preventative maintenance. Participate in building renovations.
Compile lumber and other stock and materials lists and maintain adequate inventory levels.
OTHER DUTIES
Maintain established quality and quantity standards. Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions. Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational and safe condition.
Maintain records of work performed.
In emergency situations, may be required to assist in snow removal.
Upon request, may assist other trades personnel as needed.
May serve as a lead worker over lower-level maintenance workers.
Provide back-up coverage as needed.
Respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends and holidays as needed.
Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of materials, method and techniques of the trade.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to do arithmetic computations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions.
Ability to use measurement tools.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools, materials of the trade, including the ability to use sandblasting equipment, and communication radio.
Specific vision requirements include close to normal ranges for close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and normal depth perception; ability to distinguish color-coded materials and to adjust focus.
Education and Experience
Duties require high school diploma in vocational program; three years experience in maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid driver's license is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
May give work direction to one or more employees on assigned projects.
PHYSICAL ELEMENTS
Regular use of hands and fingers to handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools and controls used in the construction and maintenance trades.
Duties require moderate, continuous physical effort such as frequent lifting and carrying supplies of varying weights up to a maximum of 60 pounds, as well as pulling, pushing and holding objects of similar weight.
Duties require frequent standing and occasional walking, climbing, sitting, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Duties also involve the regular use of ladders, lifts and scaffolding.
Duties may require outside work performed under varying weather conditions.
Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration.
