What is an interaction designer?

Interaction designers are professionals who focus on creating engaging interfaces with well thought out behaviors. Their main goal is to make digital products—like websites, apps, and software—easy and enjoyable to use. They analyze user needs and behaviors to design workflows, page layouts, and interactive elements that help users achieve their goals effectively. Interaction designers often collaborate with UX designers, developers, and product managers to ensure a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interaction designer?

To thrive as an Interaction Designer, you need a strong grasp of UX/UI principles, user research, wireframing, and prototyping, typically supported by a degree in design, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is commonly required. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities help you understand stakeholder needs and advocate for the user experience. These skills are crucial to creating intuitive, effective digital products that meet both user and business goals.

How does an interaction designer typically collaborate with developers and product managers during a project?

Interaction Designers play a key role in the product development cycle by bridging the gap between user needs and technical implementation. They frequently work closely with developers to ensure that design specifications are feasible and align with technical constraints. Collaboration with product managers is also crucial, as Interaction Designers help translate business goals into user-centric design solutions. Regular meetings, design reviews, and iterative feedback sessions are common practices to ensure alignment and smooth workflow across teams.

What is the difference between Interaction Designer vs User Experience Designer?

Are interaction designers in demand?

Interaction designers are in high demand as companies focus on user experience and digital product design. Skills in user research, prototyping, and tools like Sketch or Figma are valuable, and employment opportunities are expected to grow with the expansion of digital services.

What does an interaction designer do?

An interaction designer creates the user interfaces and experiences for digital products, focusing on how users interact with websites, apps, or software. They analyze user behavior, develop wireframes and prototypes, and collaborate with developers and stakeholders to ensure intuitive and effective designs. Proficiency in design tools and understanding user-centered design principles are essential for this role.

Job description

Senior UX Designer, VP- Charles River Development
What we are looking for:
Charles River Development seeks an exceptional Senior UX Designer to lead the design of complex, enterprise-grade user experiences across our investment management platform. This is a hands-on product design role for someone who can frame ambiguous problems, shape solutions, and deliver detailed interaction designs for sophisticated workflows.
The ideal candidate thinks holistically across products and systems, not just individual screens. They can create elegant, scalable solutions that fit within an established platform framework while improving usability, consistency, and efficiency for expert users.
This role requires deep strength in user experience design, information architecture, interaction design, workflow design, and modern UI implementation patterns. Experience designing B2B or fintech products-especially data-intensive applications-is strongly preferred.
Why this role is important to us:
As a Senior UX Designer at CRD, you will partner closely with product managers, business analysts, and engineering leads to define business problems and shape solutions for products used by traders, portfolio managers, compliance professionals, and platform operations teams.
You will work across one or more product areas within the Alpha platform and broader CRD ecosystem, helping design complex workflows for data-rich enterprise applications. These products often involve dense information displays, multi-step tasks, advanced configuration, and high-consequence user decisions.
You will also help drive consistency across products by applying and evolving shared UX patterns and the Alpha Design System. This role requires strong product thinking, excellent communication, and the ability to influence design quality from early concept through implementation.
What you will be responsible for:
  • Lead product features and initiatives through the full UX lifecycle, including discovery, workflow analysis, information architecture, interaction design, prototyping, validation, and implementation support
  • Translate complex business requirements and ambiguous problem statements into clear, effective, user-centered solutions
  • Design for enterprise workflows that are data-intensive, multi-step, and role-sensitive, including scenarios involving dashboards, tables, configuration, drill-down flows, and multi-workspace tasking
  • Create low- and high-fidelity prototypes, UX flows, interaction specifications, and developer-ready design documentation that clearly communicates intended behavior, states, and edge cases
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews from early concepts through delivery, building alignment with product and engineering stakeholders
  • Partner with engineers throughout implementation to clarify requirements, refine behavior, and preserve design quality under real-world technical constraints
  • Use and help evolve the Alpha Design System and shared UX standards to improve consistency and reuse across products
  • Conduct and/or guide discovery activities such as user interviews, workflow analysis, usability testing, and evaluation of existing experiences

Education and preferred qualifications:
8+ years of experience in UX, product design, or interaction design, including substantial experience with enterprise or B2B software
Experience designing products for the financial industry or similarly complex, domain-heavy environments
Experience with data-intensive applications, analytical tools, dashboards, and data visualization
Strong systems-thinking skills and the ability to design across connected workflows, products, and user roles
Experience working within fast-paced, cross-functional product teams using iterative delivery practices
Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks and implementation constraints, such as React-based applications, is preferred
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain detailed interaction models to product and engineering stakeholders
Expertise with Figma for design, prototyping, creating and using design systems.
Ability to work across multiple initiatives without losing focus on priorities, dependencies, and design quality
Ability to operate as a full partner with product and engineering leaders in shaping both problem definition and solution direction
A portfolio that demonstrates:
  • A strong user-centered design sensibility
  • A thoughtful approach to defining and improving complex workflows
  • The ability to create scalable interaction patterns for enterprise products
  • Clear communication of detailed behaviors, states, and functional flows
  • High-quality prototypes and specifications suitable for engineering implementation

Salary Range:
$110,000 - $188,750 Annual
The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
