What is interaction design?

Interaction design (IxD) is the practice of designing interactive digital products, environments, systems, and services. It focuses on creating engaging interfaces with well-thought-out behaviors and actions that enable users to effectively achieve their goals. Interaction designers consider elements like user flows, feedback, and usability to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience. By understanding how people interact with technology, they bridge the gap between users and digital products.

How does an interaction designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Interaction Designers work closely with product managers, developers, and visual designers throughout the design process. They participate in brainstorming sessions, communicate design decisions, and iterate on wireframes and prototypes based on feedback from stakeholders and user testing. This collaborative environment ensures that user needs, technical feasibility, and business objectives are all balanced to deliver an effective user experience. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as Interaction Designers often serve as a bridge between technical and non-technical team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interaction designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interaction Designer, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, prototyping, and usability testing, often backed by a degree in design, HCI, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, and prototyping tools, as well as knowledge of accessibility standards, is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Interaction Designers translate user needs into intuitive digital experiences. These competencies ensure that products are both functional and enjoyable, leading to higher user satisfaction and business success.

What is the difference between Interaction Design vs User Experience Design?

AspectInteraction DesignUser Experience Design
FocusDesigning interactive elements and how users engage with productsOverall experience, including usability, accessibility, and satisfaction
SkillsWireframing, prototyping, understanding user flowsResearch, user testing, visual design, and strategy
Work EnvironmentCollaborates closely with UI designers and developersWorks across research, design, and product teams

Interaction Design primarily focuses on creating engaging and intuitive interactive elements within a product, while User Experience Design encompasses the broader overall experience, including usability and emotional satisfaction. Both roles overlap but serve different aspects of the design process, often working together to deliver a seamless user journey.

Are interaction designers in demand?

Interaction designers are in high demand as companies focus on creating user-friendly digital experiences. Skills in user research, prototyping, and tools like Sketch or Figma are valuable, and employment opportunities are expected to grow with increased emphasis on UX/UI design across industries.

Job Description:

About Flywheel
Flywheel's suite of digital commerce solutions accelerate growth across all major digital marketplaces for the world's leading brands. We give clients access to near real-time performance measurement and improve sales, share, and profit. With teams across the Americas, Europe and APAC, we offer a career with real impact, endless growth opportunities and the support you need to be the best you can be.
The Opportunity
Perpetua is the retail media platform within the Flywheel Commerce Network, built for the challenger brand; the operator who cannot out spend the category leader and has to out execute instead. Advertisers set goals based on strategy and Perpetua's always on optimization executes the tactics. In this role, you will support our Perpetua product, which focuses on the seller and SMB market segment within the Flywheel portfolio.
As a Product Designer at Perpetua, you will be involved in every aspect of the product development process, from coming up with the next great product innovation to making final visual tweaks right before launch. You will bring together product thinking, interaction design, and visual craft, increasingly using AI powered tools to design faster, smarter, and with deeper insight, and you will own a large part of the Perpetua product.
This role is for someone who treats AI as a genuine creative and strategic partner in the design process, working alongside judgment and craft. You will be our founding designer, working independently and shaping how design operates as the team grows.
What You Will Do:
Own the end-to-end design of Perpetua's web and native mobile experiences
Rethink how complex, cross-channel advertising campaigns are monitored and managed - designing the patterns for trust, transparency, and control that let users set a goal, understand what an increasingly autonomous platform is doing on their behalf, and step in when they choose to.
Build on our component library, contributing new components as gaps emerge
Produce well documented user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs using tools such as Figma, Sketch, Zeplin, and Principle
Use AI for ideation, research synthesis, and quality checks, and share these practices to help the wider team move faster
Partner with engineering teams to design features that reduce friction and increase velocity
Conduct user research and use data to inform every design decision, designing for measurable outcomes like conversion and retention, validated through usability testing
Present and defend design decisions to stakeholders and leadership
Who You Are:
Diploma or degree in digital design, interaction design or communications
3-5 years of UX/UI design on a software product team
Experience with end to end (UX + UI) product design across web and native mobile applications
Experience building and working with Design Systems
Advanced proficiency in design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, Zeplin, Principle, and InVision
Hands on experience with AI design tools, and comfort designing for AI driven product features
A strong portfolio demonstrating full case studies, including problem framing, process, and measurable impact
Strong communication skills
Ability to think on your feet and adapt to changing, open ended requirements, backed by strategic product thinking and vision
