What is an intelligence salary?

An intelligence salary refers to the compensation paid to professionals working in intelligence roles, such as analysts, officers, or agents, within government agencies or private organizations. These salaries can vary widely depending on the specific position, level of experience, location, and whether the job is in the public or private sector. In the United States, intelligence analysts working for agencies like the CIA, FBI, or NSA typically earn between $50,000 and $120,000 per year, with more senior or specialized positions commanding higher salaries. To thrive as an Intelligence Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, critical thinking, and a relevant degree in fields like international relations, political science, or criminal justice. Familiarity with data analysis tools, intelligence databases, and possibly security clearances or certifications such as Certified Intelligence Analyst (CIA) are commonly required. Job Summary
NetApp is looking for a Senior Competitive Intelligence Manager to serve as our lead hands-on strategist for competitive insights in the Data and AI space. This is a high-visibility, senior individual contributor (IC) role designed for a deeply technical and strategic marketer who loves getting into the weeds of competitor offerings. You will be the primary engine driving our competitive positioning, translating complex market and product data into real-world, deal-winning guidance for our global Sales teams. Partnering closely with Sales, Product Marketing, and Product Management, you will act as a subject matter expert to ensure NetApp's intelligent data infrastructure is advantageously positioned.
Key Responsibilities:
• Drive Competitive Positioning: Directly analyze competitor offerings to develop highly differentiated, technically accurate product messaging that serves as a foundation for internal and external communications.
• Build Hands-on Sales Assets: Author and maintain highly consumable, high-impact competitive materials, including battlecards, landscapes, briefs, webcast material, and more.
• Deliver Real-Time Deal Support: Act as a direct advisor to field Sales teams during active, high-stakes sales cycles, providing tactical coaching, competitive triage, and strategies to win key deals.
• Analyze Win/Loss Dynamics: Conduct structured, post-deal win/loss reviews to identify market trends, pricing strategies, and product gaps, turning raw data into strategic recommendations.
• Manage CI Platform & Alerts: Directly curate and optimize our competitive intelligence platform (tooling) ensuring the automated capture, filtering, and distribution of real-time competitor alerts.
• Advise Product Marketing & Product Teams: Act as the go-to technical expert for product and marketing leaders, delivering deep-dive competitor SWOT analyses to help guide product roadmaps and pricing strategies.
• Monitor Market Trends: Personally track Tier 1/2 competitors, emerging startups, and industry trends to position NetApp relative to new market shifts, ecosystem dynamics, and buyer behaviors.
Job Requirements
• Domain Expertise: Deep technical understanding of the technologies, architectures, and go-to-market strategies within the B2B Data, AI, and Cloud Infrastructure industries.
• Proven CI Execution: 5+ years of hands-on experience in competitive intelligence, technical product marketing, or sales engineering, with a proven track record of personally creating high-impact competitive content.
• Hands-on Tool Proficiency: Direct experience using and managing competitive intelligence platforms (e.g., Klue, Crayon) and conversational intelligence tools (e.g., Gong) to gather field insights.
• Strong Research & Synthesis Skills: Proven ability to independently dig through competitor documentation, financial filings, and analyst reports to extract actionable, validated insights.
• Sales Collaboration: High comfort level working directly alongside Field sales teams in active sales cycles, translating technical specs into "how-to-win" sales talk-tracks.
• Execution-Oriented: A self-starter who thrives on detailed execution, with the ability to own projects end-to-end without administrative oversight or direct reports.
• Superior Communication: Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
• MBA and/or a strong technical background in data management or AI/ML workloads is highly preferred.
Equivalent combination of additional experience as stated above can be considered in place of academic degree listed.
Compensation:
The target salary range for this position is $175,000-200,000. The salary offered will be determined by the candidate's location, qualifications, experience, and education and may be outside of this range.
