Integration Intern information

What is an integration intern?

Integration Interns are entry-level professionals or students who assist with the process of connecting different software systems, applications, or platforms within an organization. Their responsibilities often include supporting the development, testing, and troubleshooting of integration solutions under the guidance of senior team members. They may work with APIs, data formats, and middleware tools to ensure seamless data flow between systems. Integration Internships provide hands-on experience in IT integration projects and are valuable for those interested in careers in software engineering, systems integration, or IT consulting.

What types of projects and collaborations can an integration intern expect during their internship?

As an Integration Intern, you will typically work on projects that involve connecting different software systems, platforms, or databases to create seamless workflows within the organization. You can expect to collaborate closely with software developers, QA engineers, and project managers as you assist in designing, testing, and troubleshooting integration solutions. Interns often have the opportunity to contribute to real client projects, gaining hands-on experience with APIs, data mapping, and middleware tools. This role provides a valuable understanding of how different IT systems interact and can be a stepping stone to more advanced roles in systems engineering or software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an integration intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Integration Intern, you need a foundational understanding of software development, APIs, and data integration concepts, often gained through coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Postman, integration platforms (e.g., MuleSoft or Dell Boomi), and basic scripting languages is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities are essential for successfully supporting integration projects, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with technical teams.

What is the difference between Integration Intern vs Integration Specialist?

AspectIntegration InternIntegration Specialist

Interns are typically students gaining initial exposure, while specialists are experienced professionals managing integration projects. Internships serve as training roles, whereas specialists handle complex, ongoing integration tasks.

Open Road Integrated Media is a prestige content brand delivering digital experiences that entertain and inform readers around the world. Laser-focused on revenue, reach, and repeat customers, the Open Road network of digital properties produces compelling stories that keep audiences engaged — across devices, content verticals, and global territories.

Intern responsibilities include researching story ideas, writing pitches and stories for the websites, search engine optimization research, and sourcing photos. The intern will receive bylines, learn about working in a content management system, best practices for SEO, honing editorial judgment, and writing for a variety of audiences.
This position is unpaid and for-credit only. The intern must be eligible to receive academic credit for this internship. For consideration, the intern must be able to work on-site in our Manhattan office two days per week.
